It's right for SCOTUS to serve long terms, as their decisions have long reach. And longer terms allow for some (theoretical, at least) separation from political expediency. 18 years is a good term, because it allows every president—the representative of the people—equal influence on the Court.

Rotating 18-year terms would have each President nominating 2 justices per term, so the court would now be 4 Obama justices, 3 Trump justices, and 2 Biden justices. (a 6-3 liberal majority, the opposite of the current conservative majority). Trump would replace Obama's first appointment next year.

If Supreme Court justices had 18-year terms, Clarence Thomas would have retired in 2009 and been replaced by Obama. From 2007 to 2026, Democrats have controlled the presidency for 12 years and Republicans for 8. Yet they've split SCOTUS appointments in that time 3-3.

I was a senior in HS and had a free period on non-lab days. I used to go home for breakfast. So I was watching GMA which put up a live feed of the 1st tower smoking while they speculated about what happened. And then we saw the second plane hit live.

Challenger exploded on ascent. It was the 25th shuttle launch, but people were still very into the space program and watched the launch. The launch was just before noon and millions of schoolchildren did watch it live, particularly because there was a teacher, Christa McAuliffe was on board.
