Posting daily October reading recs on my office door, in no particular order. October 1 is Bird Box, by Josh Malerman. I devoured this during an international flight shortly after it came out. One of the most horrific birth scenes I've ever read. Don't watch the bad movie adaptation.

A crowded broadsheet with way too many fonts. It says:

New in Paperback! 'Romantic Medicine and the Gothic Imagination' by @lkremmel.bsky.social demonstrates how Gothic literature experiments with and subverts Romantic medical debates to reassess the power of nonnormative bodies. 📚️ www.uwp.co.uk/book/romanti...
‘This volume is an exhilarating exploration of the shadowy hinterland that was shared by medical discourse and Gothic writing in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries. As major a contribution to Gothic Studies as it is to the fields of Romanticism and the Medical Humanities more broadly, Romantic Medicine is an extraordinary feat of critical revivification that infuses fresh life-blood into the pathological corpus of early Gothic romance, poetry and drama.’

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

This is pretty fucking wild. I had assumed in a worst case scenario he would target blue zip codes and toss ballots based on technicalities but this is even worse than I imagined.
Not only is this system astonishingly untested, USPS has simultaneously implemented an
impracticable zero percent failure rate.
13 When ballots are submitted to USPS in large-volume
batches, if any one ballot in the batch cannot be verified against the Portal, all ballots in that
batch will be rejected. For example, if a state election official brings a batch of 10,000 ballots to
USPS and USPS is unable to match just one of those ballots against the Portal – because, for
example, someone has recently changed their name after marriage or they’ve moved – then
USPS would refuse to mail the remaining 9,999 ballots as well. As the whistleblower notes,
