I wrote this a few weeks ago when it wasn’t #nationalpoetryday2026 so I’m sharing it today as this seems to be the correct day for it. And I still mean it. Phew. #poetsofbluesky #poetry #poetrycommunity

It’s not necessarily beautiful but it’s true. Oil on wood panel. ‘I never actually asked for any of this’ #artistsonbluesky #gesturalart #oilpainting #abstractart.
A vibrant abstract square oil painting. The words ‘I actually never asked for any of this’ are stencilled in the top left corner. There is a sort of shed drowning or emerging in blue. There’s a figure sat between the shed and a vague tree. There’s a star in the top right. Reds and pinks and purples swirl.

I went into Scarborough M&S in the rain and came out to full sun. So hotfooted it down the hill to the beach and there it was in all its late summer glory. Love this place out of season. #stunday #seaside #photographersofbluesky #coastalphotography #eastcoastkin #scarborough #northyorkshire
A sunny beach photo. A lifeguard red and yellow flag to the left. Bitty white clouds against a vibrant cerulean sky. A lighthouse in the distance.

A little acrylic on a 3x3 inch wood panel. It’s Whitby Pier if you’re stood about half way down, looking back. Poetic license taking out all the houses. Too small for the detail 😁 #BlueSkyArtShow #acrylicpainting #whitby #northyorkshire #miniaturepainting
A small square acrylic painting of Whitby pier. The pier is the dominant central feature
Coming at you as if you’re stood on it looking towards Whitby abbey. A lighthouse to your right. The abbey is sat on a green hill in the distance. The sea is either side of the abbey. White railings run alongside the pier.

One of my favourite places in the world. Especially when the heather does its late summer show. #Levisham #NorthYorkshire.

Toad in the Hole GOD tier incoming. (I have notoriously failed in this for many years, so today is QUITE the day)
An excellent toad in the whole in a blackened tin on a wooden surface. Good for on the batter, plump sausages nestled in.

It’s #worldphotographyday and this is my favourite photo so far this year. I took it on 11th August at Dad’s wedding. He’s 83 and on his 24th round of chemo for AML. They met later in life and are hugely in love. They’re the definition of optimism❤️🫶🏼❤️🫶🏼
A white 83 yr old man in a checked shirt offers a kiss to the love of his life - a white woman in a polka dot dress. They’re both holding a knife and cutting their wedding cake - a simple but elegant 2 tiered cake with white icing. Neither of them are looking at the cake. There are 9 small plates stacked on the table.

I was thinking of saying how fucking tired of it all I am But then I took a breath and thought instead of how I will (I have to I will) wake up tomorrow (later today) And on opening my eyes the choice of ‘yes’ or ‘no’ materialises And I think it will be ‘yes’ again.

I’ve just picked THE MOST fragrant bunch of flowers in THE HISTORY of time. My garden is delivering right now. #bloomscrolling #flowerphotography #eastcoastkin #honeysuckle #sweetpeas #lavender
A vibrant bunch of blooms held aloft by my navy blue jumpered arm. Pink and red sweet peas, honeysuckle, lavender and carnations. The background is purple clematis and chocolate roses. I know right?

My honeysuckle is intoxicating this evening. Like - it knocked me backwards when I went to put the bins out. Beautiful. Lucky bees.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 303: Scene-setting doesn't have to be an entire page of description: you can do as much with a well-placed detail (a sound, a scent, a menu, a reflection of buildings in the water) than with a whole travelogue.

I can’t begin to explain how much it’s benefitted me to start making art again after a very long time away. It’s quiet and absorbing, and even though I’m Not Great, I can see old skills resurrecting, and I improve pretty quickly. I’m able to let the horrors go, and concentrate on what I’m doing.

See also: direct young people’s theatre and move on to ‘professional’ theatre. When you can deliver a professionally made show, on time, with a cast of 60, rehearsing for 2 hours a week you can DEFINITELY rehearse with circa 4 paid actors, full time, for 4 weeks with a full time production team 🤦🏻‍♀️

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 1378: Many would-be authors make the mistake of believing that you "start off" as a children's writer, then "move on" to writing for adults. This is both completely incorrect, and terribly disrespectful to children's authors.

Someone asked me what my poetry is about. I replied: “People.” They said: “That’s a broad subject.” I said: “Not really. It’s the same story every time. Someone trying to be free. Someone trying to be loved. Someone trying to survive.” Anyway, I put a few hundred pages of that story into a book.

Sometimes a day is just perfect. Cuppa with my bestie, now in my little conservatory with the rain drumming on the roof. Warm. Painting with no one to worry about.
A table with a grey and white spotted table covering, a table easel with 2 square paintings on it. A blue water bottle, jar of brushes and a jug of water, a wooden crate and tubes of paint on top of the table. The floor is black and white harlequin squares. A grey saddle stool under the table. In the foreground right is a large easel with an abstract painting in red and blue.

RESURFACING acrylic on beech board Happy #worldoceanday all. As an islander the ocean runs through my veins, my heart, my soul. Here’s a painting I did today in honour of the mighty sea. #abstractart #seascape #artyear #artistsofbluesky
A dynamic painting that looks to me like someone coming up for air from under the sea. Slate greys and blues and greens become mustard, ochre and cerulean blue. Flecks of white.

Late as always on a Saturday for #blueskyartshow but here we are. Not really fulfilling the #busy theme but nevertheless art, Bluesky, Saturday! Heavy Head. Acrylic on canvas.
A painting - abstracted … pale blue background, 2 ochre shallow bowls floating one on top of the other at the top of the painting. Underneath a shape suggesting a head maybe, under that a half crescent in greeny blue, under that a red figure maybe with black and blue outline. Sometimes alt text is really hard.

My #tall painting for #BlueskyArtShow. A favourite of mine. Maybe it’s called ‘so close and yet so far away’ Anyway some tall rocks with tiny houses. Or massive houses on gargantuan rocks. I dunno. I just paint it 😊
2 large seemingly floating in space oblong rocks. One behind the other. The foreground rock is hot reds, oranges and yellows. The background lilacs and blues. Both have a tiny house atop. The background is blue-ish.
