NGC 5033 - From Judy Schmidt (geckzilla.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/Qq3d3g
A very close look at the nucleus of NGC 5033. This was imaged back in 2005 when the Advanced Camera for Surveys High Resolution Channel was still functional. It was imaged along with some spectroscopy from Hubble's spectrograph, STIS, to help measure the mass of the black hole at its center by determining the velocity of the stuff whirling around it. Physics!

The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) and NGC 2023 - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/rhRRAz
In the Shadow of the Horsehead - Deep 26 Hour Version

I recently added a Ha filter to my collection and promptly put it to the test by soaking up a decent amount of data on the Horsehead nebula. I wanted to improve on my initial attempt on this target from 2014. One of the issues was that I'd like to show the delicate 'curtain' structure of IC 434, the bright glowing hydrogen emission that the Horsehead is silhouetted against.
This also prompted me to add more data to the LRGB channels as well in order to bring out the faint dust details better, so all together with last year's data I ended up with over 26 hours of data which I completely reprocessed and assembled into this updated version.
I'm pleased that the result has higher resolution and more depth than last years' effort. The colours are also richer and more refined and in particular the Ha curtains now stand out above and around the Horsehead.

About the image:
The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33) is without doubt one of the most recognized and fascinating objects in the sky. This iconic feature is formed by the sharp outline of a dark dust cloud, with a remarkable likeness to a horse's head, silhouetted against a brightly glowing patch of ionized Hydrogen (IC434) that is being energized by the hard ultraviolet radiation from nearby Sigma Orionis, a...

For Hubble's 36 anniversary, NASA has released this image of the Trifid Nebula, a star-forming region in the constellation Sagittarius. It's a beautiful image, one that also calls up a lot of emotional history for me (a short thread). 🧪🔭 science.nasa.gov/missions/hub...
This shimmering region of star-formation, a close-up of the Trifid Nebula about 5,000 light-years from Earth, was captured in intricate detail by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The colors in Hubble’s visible light image, which marks the 36th anniversary of the mission's launch on April 24, are reminiscent of an underwater scene filled with fine-grained sediments fluttering through the ocean’s depths.

Several massive stars, which are outside this field of view, have shaped this region for at least 300,000 years. (See them in a wider view.) Their powerful winds continue to blow an enormous bubble, a small portion of which is shown here, that pushes and compresses the cloud’s gas and dust, triggering new waves of star formation.

My god. It's full of stars. This sparkling #JWST stellar scene is Westerlund 2, a young star cluster only a few million years old and containing some of the hottest, most massive stars known. Westerlund 2 is situated within the Gum 29 stellar nursery, and is around 20,000 lightyears from home.
A sparling scene is six-pointed stars, with a large cluster at upper centre and a particularly bright example at lower right. The background is wispy and in shades of blue and grey–red, with a bright border of reddy–orange clouds along the left and bottom of the scene.

A close-in view of a spiral galaxy that faces the viewer. Brightly lit spiral arms swing outward through the galaxy’s disk, starting from an elliptical region in its center. Thick strands of dark reddish dust spread across the disk, primarily along the spiral arms. I FOUND THE FULL RESOLUTION OF THE NEW JWST IMAGE AND I’M SPEECHLESS!!!
In what appears as a celestial dreamscape, a blue and black sky filled with brilliant stars covers about two thirds of the image. The stars are different sizes and shades of white, beige, yellow, and light orange. Across the bottom third of the scene is a craggy, mountain-like vista with spire-like peaks and deep, seemingly misty valleys. These so-called mountains appear in varying shades of orange, yellow, and brown. The soaring spires are going up, up, up, where a wispy, ethereal white cloud stretches horizontally across the scene. Steam appears to rise from the mountaintops and join with this cloud. At the top, right corner of the image, a swath of orange and brown structure cuts diagonally across the sky.

We’re here to sweep you away … with an intricate Hubble view of a star-forming region near the Tarantula Nebula. Stars form when clumps of gas become dense enough. The clumps are typically shrouded in dust, which appears dark brown here. Credit: NASA, ESA. 🔭 🧪
Hubble Space Telescope image is awash in color and hundreds of stars. Dozens of bright blue stars are scattered across the field, some appearing larger than others, and most with four diffraction spikes. Many stars throughout appear bright red, also with diffraction spikes. The red stars are all smaller than the blue stars, and many are so tiny they appear only as pinpricks. Semi-transparent gas and dust are spread throughout, like gauzy layers of fabric. Light gray layers of gas and dust start at top left and drift down toward the bottom right, forming a rough upside-down V shape. From top middle to right middle, darker and thinner filaments of brown dust flow irregularly, with some portions denser and darker, like knots. The top right corner has lighter blue semi-transparent material. Toward the bottom left and up toward the center, there’s a slightly clearer area that has deeper blue semi-transparent material.

the human eye can’t even SEE the full image that rubin took of this portion of the sky. it would take 400 ULTRA HD tv screens for our eyes to be able to see it. the field of view is 45 TIMES the area of the full moon. we are entering a new era of astronomy.
A sprawling, textured field of galaxies scattered across the deep black of space. It is filled with the delicate smudges and glowing cores of galaxies of many shapes, sizes and colors, as well as the bright multi-colored points of stars. To the lower left is a region filled with the hundreds of golden glittering gems of a distant galaxy cluster. In the foreground, below and right of center, two blue spiral galaxies look like eyes beneath the entangled mass of a triple galaxy merger in the upper right. A few bright blue points of foreground stars pierce the glittering tapestry.
Throughout the image, thousands of galaxies gather in clusters or are spread throughout, like glittering gems strewn on a table. Some are sharp-edged and spiral, like coiled ribbons; others round and diffuse, like polished pebbles. Still others are just smudges of various colors against the black of space. The background is peppered with pinpoint stars in reds, yellows, and blues, crisp against the velvet black.

At the center is a thin vertical cloud known as Lynds 483 that is shaped like an hourglass with irregular edges. At lower center are two discrete bright white, tiny blobs of light that have raced away from the hidden central stars. The top lobe shows a more prominent orange U-shape. Orange bleeds into light purple, and brighter pink at its edges. Some background stars are visible through sections of this lobe. Higher up, there is an orange arc. Some brighter pink material extends to the top edges near the center. In the lower lobe, less orange is visible. More opaque light purple is in its top third, rippling out into semi-transparent blues and pinks. The lower lobe has more texture. V-shapes left and right of the lobes are darkest, and the background stars in these areas appear orange. Elsewhere, the black background of space is clearer, speckled with tiny white stars and faint orange galaxies.A star cluster is shown inside a large nebula of many-coloured gas and dust. The material forms dark ridges and peaks of gas and dust surrounding the cluster, lit on the inner side, while layers of diffuse, translucent clouds blanket over them. Around and within the gas, a huge number of distant galaxies can be seen, some quite large, as well as a few stars nearer to us which are very large and bright.A wider field view of Westerlund 1. A dense cluster of bright stars, each with six large and two small diffraction spikes, due to the telescope’s optics. They have a variety of sizes depending on their brightness and distance from us in the cluster, and different colours reflecting different types of star. Patches of billowing red gas can be seen in and around the cluster, lit up by the stars. Small stars in the cluster blend into a background of distant stars and galaxies on black.Red dual opposing jets coming from young stars fill the darker top half of the image. At bottom center is a glowing pale yellow, cave-like structure, its top tilted toward two o’clock, with a bright star at its center. The dust of the cave structure becomes wispy toward eight o’clock. Above the arched top of the dust cave, 3 groupings of stars with diffraction spikes are arranged. A dark cloud sits at the top of the arch of the glowing dust cave, with one streamer curling down the right-hand side. The dark shadow of the cloud appears pinched in the center, with light emerging in a triangle shape above and below the pinch, revealing the presence of a star inside the cloud. The largest jets of red material emanate from within this dark cloud, thick and displaying structure like the rough face of a cliff, glowing brighter at the edges. At top center, a star displays another, larger pinched dark shadow, this time vertically. To the left of this star is a more wispy, indistinct region.

Very dark gray material shaped like a triangle or shark fin extends from just below top left all the way down to the lower right corner and back up toward the top right. It looks like thick smoke that has billowed out irregularly, thicker along the line from top left to bottom right, and looser on the piece that goes toward the top right. Behind the dark gray on the left side, from the bottom left to top center, there is dust that looks like arced claw marks that appears in light orange and yellow. The background at top left is hazier and some blues are covered in semi-transparent orange wisps, which makes sections take on green hues. In the bottom right, the background is bluer. There are a few bright red and purple stars scattered along the right half, most toward the bottom. The largest star is at right-center, just at the edge. It is red and has four diffraction spikes.A tall, thin structure of dark gas clouds. This pillar is darker and broader at its base, thins toward the middle, and broadens out again at the top, with spikes, fingers, and wisps of gas protruding in all directions from its head. Some parts of the pillar are illuminated, but most are dark and silhouetted at the edges and lit from behind. A wall of colorful gas lies behind the pillar, bluish at the top and redder toward the bottom, with several blue and gold stars scattered across it.A massive spiral galaxy fills the image, with its bright yellow core seen near the upper left. A massive spiral galaxy fills the image, with its bright yellow core seen near the upper left. Spiral arms whirl outward, laced through with dark brown dust and bright blue patches of star formation.Angled from the upper left corner to the lower right corner is a cone-shaped orange-red cloud known as Herbig-Haro 49/50. This feature takes up about three-fourths of the length of this angle. The upper left end of this feature has a translucent, rounded end. The conical feature widens slightly from the rounded end at the upper right down to the lower right. Along the cone there are additional rounded edges, like edges of a wave, and intricate foamy-like details, as well as a clearer view of the black background of space. In the upper left, overlapping with the rounded end of Herbig-Haro 49/50, is a background spiral galaxy with a concentrated blue center that fades outward to blend with red spiral arms. The background of space is speckled with some white stars and smaller, more numerous, fainter white galaxies throughout.A densely packed cluster of yellow stars shines at the center of the image, with more stars scattered throughout. Clouds of glowing indigo gas and dust dominate the lower half of the view, and a red star with diffraction spikes shines at upper right.A nebula made up of cloudy gas and dust in the form of soft and wispy clouds and, in the center, thin and highly detailed layers pressed close together. A star cluster within a nebula. The background is filled with thin, pale blue clouds. Parts are thicker and pinker in colour. The cluster is made up of bright blue stars that illuminate the nebula around them. Large arcs of dense dust curve around, before and behind the clustered stars, pressed together by the stars’ radiation. Behind the clouds of the nebula can be seen large numbers of orange stars.

New JWST image: portions of Flame nebula (right). science.nasa.gov/missions/web... NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Michael Meyer (University of Michigan), Matthew De Furio (UT Austin), Massimo Robberto (STScI), Alyssa Pagan (STScI)
A collage of three near-infrared images showing a dusty nebula. The left two-thirds of the collage is taken up by a Hubble image of the nebula. The remaining third is taken up by two Webb images, one atop the other. The Hubble image has a pillar of dense brown dust running through the nebula at a diagonal from 5 o’clock to 11 o’clock. Wispy plumes appear to fly off from the pillar toward the sides amid blue clouds of the same material, which are whiter near the pillar. There are many white stars spread throughout. Two separate, white squares, tilted about 30 degrees, outline two areas in the pillar. The upper square has the letter “A” to the top right, while the lower square is marked by the letter “B”. These labels correspond to the two, magnified images of the nebula at right, with the top image also labeled “A” and the bottom image labeled “B”. Both images contain a mixture of reds, blues and browns, and show red, blue, and white stars.

Low Mass Objects within the Flame Nebula in Infrared Light, in the new JWST image. NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, M. Meyer (University of Michigan)
A collage of four images showing a dusty nebula. Two-thirds of the collage is taken up by a single image of the nebula, while the remaining third shows three insets stacked on top of each other. In the largest image at left, there is an orange and yellow fang-like cloud of matter that cuts the image in two. The left side of the fang shows more clouds of a dark brown shade, while the right shows filaments of light brown. There are a number of bright blue and red points of light spread throughout, three of which are circled in white and labeled with a number from one to three. Circle 1 is located at about 12 o’clock in the middle of the fang-like cloud, while Circle 2 is at about 5 o’clock and Circle 3 is located at about 7 o’clock, toward the bottom left of the image. Each circle magnifies an individual object, which is shown in each of the three squares to the right of the collage, labeled 1 to 3 from top to bottom. Each image contains a single, fuzzy point of light in the middle.

This is a near-infrared image from the James Webb Space Telescope's NIRCam instrument, showcasing a complex and dynamic region of star formation. Bright wisps and filaments of gas and dust, illuminated by the powerful radiation from young stars, swirl and intertwine, creating a textured and ethereal scene. The image is dominated by warm hues, with areas of intense star formation glowing brightly in shades of red and orange. Darker, denser regions of gas and dust appear as shadowy silhouettes against the brighter background, hinting at the ongoing processes of stellar birth and the intricate structures of the interstellar medium. The overall effect is one of awe-inspiring beauty and complexity, revealing the raw energy and creative forces at work in the early universe.

i feel like we all need another timeline cleanser
A large galaxy is at center, and a significantly smaller galaxy is to its left. The large galaxy is mostly face-on, but the top appears slightly tilted away. It has several rings. Its circular core is bright white at the very center, but light yellow overall. Going outward, there are gaps between the rings. The core is surrounded by two slightly lighter yellow rings, which also appear to be overlapping. The next ring is slightly more transparent and yellow. The two or three rings that are farther out are bluer, sometimes with blue clumps. The widest ring is also blue, but also the most transparent. At 9 o’clock is a small dwarf galaxy. It is about the same size as the yellow core of the Bullseye. The dwarf galaxy is blue, with many dots. It looks like the edge of the Bullseye might touch the dwarf galaxy. Both galaxies are set on the black background of space, which is dotted with a range of galaxies in different shapes, colors, and sizes, along with one foreground star at left.A concentration of bright blue stars occupies the bottom right corner of the image. At bottom center within them is a small blue bubble. The stars and bubble are part of a diffuse dwarf galaxy that extends beyond the image border. Background galaxies are scattered across the image, with some particularly prominent spirals located at upper left and upper right. The background of space is black. This is a highly detailed composite image of a star-forming region of space known as 30 Doradus, shaped like a bouquet, or a maple leaf.

X-ray wind and gas takes the shape of a massive purple and pink bouquet with an extended central flower, or perhaps a leaf from a maple tree. The hazy, mottled shape occupies much of the image, positioned just to our left of center, tilted slightly to our left. Inside the purple and pink gas and wind cloud are red and orange veins, and pockets of bright white light. The red and orange veins represent energy ejected by supernovas, carried on cosmically strong winds. The pockets of white light represent clusters of young stars. One cluster at the heart of 30 Doradus houses the most massive stars astronomers have ever found.

The hazy purple and pink bouquet is surrounded by glowing dots of green, white, orange, and red. A second mottled purple cloud shape, which resembles a ring of smoke, sits in our lower righthand corner. This is a composite image of star cluster NGC 602, in vibrant and festive colors. The shape of the star cluster strongly resembles a holiday wreath. The cluster includes a giant dust cloud ring, shown in greens, yellows, blues, and oranges. The green hues and feathery edges of the ring cloud create the appearance of a wreath made of evergreen boughs. Hints of red representing X-rays provide shading, highlighting layers within the wreath-like ring cloud.

The image is aglow with specks and dots of colorful, festive light, in blues, golds, whites, oranges, and reds. These lights represent stars within the cluster. Some of the lights gleam with diffraction spikes, while others emit a warm, diffuse glow. Upon closer inspection, many of the glowing specks have spiraling arms, indicating that they are, in fact, distant galaxies.

i can’t fix anything that’s going on right now, but i can show you some beauty that’s out there… 🌌✨
Many stars crowd the image, shining in shades of white, blue, and orange, and more closely concentrated at the center.Bright blue stars are in a cluster at the center of the image. They are surrounded by a shell of brownish and burnt orange dust and gas. The shell has ridges that reach towards the stars like teeth. Stars within the dust and gas are hidden from Hubble but visible to Webb in the infrared. A number of more distant galaxies also appear in the background.Ferocious stellar winds, likely from the bright blue star at the top of the image, are blowing through a curtain of dust. The fine dust scatters the starlight at blue wavelengths. Farther down, another bright, super-hot star shines through filaments of obscuring dust, looking like the Sun shining through scattered clouds. A diagonal string of fainter accompanying stars looks reddish because dust is filtering starlight, allowing more of the red light to get through. The bottom of the picture presents a keyhole peek deep into the dark nebula. Hubble captures the reddish glow of ionized hydrogen. It looks like a fireworks finale, with several overlapping events.Fluffy tan-colored nebula clouds, with rust-colored highlights, surround a black central area. Within that area, the focal point of the image is one large yellow star with eight long thin points. To the right of this star is a bright star cluster in an oval shape. The stars within the cluster look like tiny pale blue sparkles. The cluster is more densely packed at its core and scatters outward. Towards the bottom of the image, multiple arms appear to spiral out of a cloudy tan knob. Taken together, the structures resemble a spider or a squid. Other blue and yellow eight-pointed stars, as well as distant galaxies, are dotted throughout the image. Credits: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Webb ERO Production Team

A glowing orange region shines at the upper left corner, with dark brown and black dust cascading diagonally down to the lower right. Distant stars dot the hazy background of space. Bright pink regions of star formation are interspersed throughout the dust.A bright, white galactic core shines near the center of the image with a faint bar of stars extending from it, diagonally to the right. Faint, hazy spiral arms encircle the core, with several distant stars and bright blue foreground stars with diffraction spikes scattered throughout the image, all against black space. An irregularly shaped bright orange cloud dense gas and dust, which appears darker and more compact at center and is outlined by thinner gas and dust in light shades of blue. A multitude of bright stars shine against a black background.A nebula with stars. Dense clouds of dust and gas cover the left-hand side and a filament crosses the center horizontally. Billowing streams of gas and dust in various colors emerge from around the center. The very center of the image is permeated with glowing orange regions. Many blue stars with cross-shaped spikes lie in the foreground, and small point-like stars are visible beyond the clouds.

my current favorite jwst images 🌌
A star cluster is shown inside a large nebula of many-coloured gas and dust. The material forms dark ridges and peaks of gas and dust surrounding the cluster, lit on the inner side, while layers of diffuse, translucent clouds blanket over them. Around and within the gas, a huge number of distant galaxies can be seen, some quite large, as well as a few stars nearer to us which are very large and bright. The image is divided horizontally by an undulating line between a cloudscape forming a nebula along the bottom portion and a comparatively clear upper portion. Speckled across both portions is a starfield, showing innumerable stars of many sizes. The smallest of these are small, distant, and faint points of light. The largest of these appear larger, closer, brighter, and more fully resolved with 8-point diffraction spikes. The upper portion of the image is blueish, and has wispy translucent cloud-like streaks rising from the nebula below. The orangish cloudy formation in the bottom half varies in density and ranges from translucent to opaque. The stars vary in color, the majority of which, have a blue or orange hue. The cloud-like structure of the nebula contains ridges, peaks, and valleys – an appearance very similar to a mountain range. Three long diffraction spikes from the top right edge of the image suggest the presence of a large star just out of view. This image of the Ring Nebula, taken by Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera, appears as a distorted doughnut. The nebula’s inner cavity hosts shades of blue and green, while the detailed ring transitions through shades of orange in the inner regions and pink in the outer region. The ring’s inner region has distinct filament elements. Stars litter the scene, with a particularly prominent star with 8 long spikes in the top right corner. An infrared light echo traveling from the lower left through the upper right of the image. The image is speckled with dozens of white stars, some showing Webb’s signature 8-point diffraction spikes, against the black background of space. The image also shows tightly packed, glowing red filaments that resemble muscle fibers or wood grain.⁣
