A reprocessed view of the California Nebula (NGC 1499), captured with 10+ hours of exposure in Sii, Ha, and Oiii using the Hubble palette. This version enhances the nebula’s depth, unveiling rich textures and subtle color transitions in this vast interstellar cloud. #Astrophotography #SHO #DeepSky
A newly reprocessed astrophotography image of the California Nebula (NGC 1499), revealing enhanced depth, refined textures, and subtle color transitions. Captured using over 10 hours of exposure, this image combines 40x5-minute frames through a 3nm Antlia Sulphur II (Sii) filter, 40x5-minute frames through a 3nm Antlia Hydrogen Alpha (Ha) filter, and 40x5-minute frames through a 3nm Antlia Oxygen III (Oiii) filter. The data is processed in the Hubble Space Telescope (SHO) palette, where ionized sulphur appears as rich golden hues, hydrogen glows in soft amber, and doubly ionized oxygen emerges in cooler tones.
The California Nebula stretches diagonally across the frame, its intricate gaseous filaments and dark, winding voids sculpted by powerful stellar winds and radiation. The reprocessing brings out finer details in the nebula’s structure, showcasing a more natural contrast between glowing ionized gas and the surrounding darkness of deep space. The hot, massive star Xi Persei, a primary source of the nebula’s ionization, stands out against the cosmic backdrop.
This image was taken with an Atik Cameras Atik One 6.0 and a William Optics Redcat 71 telescope, mounted on a Sky-Watcher EQ8 equatorial mount. The refined processing highlights the nebula’s three-dimensional appearance, offering a breathtaking glimpse into this vast cosmic cloud. A testament to the power of narrowband imaging and careful post-processing.

Over 10 hours of exposure reveals the stunning California Nebula (NGC 1499) in SHO (Hubble) palette. Captured through 3nm Sii, Ha, and Oiii @antliafilter.bsky.social , this image unveils cosmic drama in vivid gold and teal hues. A blend of art and science. #Astrophotography #SHO #DeepSky
An astrophotography image of the California Nebula (NGC 1499) rendered in the Hubble SHO palette. The nebula glows in vibrant shades of golden yellow and teal, revealing intricate, web-like tendrils of ionized gas. This composition was created using over 10 hours of exposure: 40x5-minute images through a 3nm Antlia Sulphur II (Sii) filter, 40x5-minute images through a 3nm Antlia Hydrogen Alpha (Ha) filter, and 40x5-minute images through a 3nm Antlia Oxygen III (Oiii) filter.

The image highlights the nebula’s elongated structure, resembling the outline of California, with bright regions of star formation and darker, shadowy voids sculpted by interstellar winds. The vibrant gold tones represent ionized sulphur, while teal hues capture the glow of doubly ionized oxygen.

The photo was captured using an Atik Cameras Atik One 6.0, paired with a William Optics Redcat 71 telescope mounted on a Sky-Watcher EQ8 equatorial mount. The wide field of view enhances the nebula’s grandeur, set against a backdrop of countless stars scattered throughout the frame.

This meticulous process combines art and science, showcasing the nebula as both a visual masterpiece and a testament to the power of modern astrophotography techniques.
