We started school September 1 with THE WORST timetables ever. I am not kidding. First years (11 years old) last thing on a Friday (they used to finish 12.40 Fri). Sudden imposition of Period 10 (16.05-16.50). Huge gaps in the middle of the day for kids from all year levels. It was an absolute mess.

It’s the end of September. Haven’t had much time for #mudlarking this month but here are nine sweet finds spotted over the last few weeks. From the top, left to right: • corner piece from a Medieval Penn tile featuring fleur-de-lis pattern ⚜️ • limestone marble, possibly from Salzburg 17th/18thC 1/
Nine finds from September on the Thames Foreshore. From the top, left to right - a corner of a medieval floor tile showing a fleur-de-lis pattern, a limestone marble from Salzburg (late 17th/18thC), a clay pipe bowl showing a 16thC man dressed in headgear from that era, the pipe made by Gambier of Paris.
Middle row - a green glass duck, a handful of handmade 14th to 18thC dress pins, a blue on white Transferware sherd showing a waterman in a boat.
Bottom row - a child’s lead toy car toy, a sherd of blue & manganese Westerwald grey stoneware pottery, a piece of black flint showing a fossilised bivalve shell.

A's birthday party today - escape room + cake! (Yes her birthday was over a month ago, but her friends are always away on summer holidays... Also I am very disorganised)
Close up of a cake, sloppily frosted with blue lemon buttercream. It has some sprinkles and small Hatsune Miku figurines on it.

Folks are bragging that they've gotten the new Meta Glasses ADA-qualified as hearing aids so you cannot legally keep them from restrooms or locker rooms. But if hearing aid with pervert cam is ok what about: Wheelchairs with car-crushing monster truck wheels? Guide dog with a gatling gun?

My five year old has the soul of Orson Welles. We were outside school and he 'put a kiss in my pocket for later.' Extremely touched by this, I gave him two back. He dug out the second one, THEATRICALLY CRUSHED IT IN HIS FIST and said 'one is enough.'

being so fr when I say that transmisogyny has put feminism back like 50 years

seravph
what i thought we had distanced ourselves from was the reduction of women to vaginas and wombs and the ability to bear children. i thought we had progressed past 'dresses are for women and pants are for men. i thought we progressed past the idea that someone is less of a woman if she does not adhere strictly to beauty standards. i thought we progressed past the idea that naturally being comfortable adhering to highly feminine standards is vulgar. but i (sarcastically) guess no one could have predicted that trans-exclusive feminism would be the downfall of all the progress we've made

#EduSky - any teachers with arthritis in their hands (or really, anyone with arthritis who has to write or use fine motor skills) - what works for you in terms of manual marking and note taking? I've only recently been diagnosed and am noticing it is worse this school year.

I think she'd be surprised, because she thought she'd be an actor or diplomat. But I could show her how much theatre and diplomacy is involved in teaching 😁 she'd be PISSED that I was no longer using Chinese and had to learn German in the meantime. She'd be thrilled to be living in Europe.

While my maternal grandmother was a Polish citizen, she lived most of her early life in Latvia. The past five days here have been amazing.
A photo of a painting of my Babcia's home, Malinówka, near Daugavpils. My uncle was offered this land as her oldest male relative when the USSR was being dissolved. He signed it away without asking either of his sisters. They were understandably hacked off at him.

Well, what I always say, "I just want everybody to be treated good." I try not to get into the politics of everything. I try to get into the human element of it. I have some of everybody in my own immediate family and in my circle of employees. I've got transgender people. I've got gays. I've got lesbians. I've got drunks. I've got drug addicts — all within my own family. I know and love them all, and I do not judge.

And I just see how broken-hearted they get over certain things and I know how real they are. I know how important this is to them. That's who they are. They cannot help that any more than I can help being Dolly Parton, you know, the way people know me. If there's something to be judged, that is God's business. But we are all God's children and how we are is who we are.

If anyone is wondering, I don't use generative AI. It offers me nothing useful creatively and nothing trustworthy as research. The environmental impact is appalling and the companies who developed it stole copyright intellectual property knowing that is illegal. GenAI is dishonest at every level.

connect your family calendars and explain your kids' interests.
every morning for the drive to school, have it make a podcast that talks about one kid's soccer game that afternoon, one kid's upcoming birthday, some news, etc.

Truer words have never been written.
A photo of a section of page 7 from Kathleen MacMahon's "Other People's Lives":
'Aw,' he groaned, looking into the fridge. 'Do we've no eggs?'

'No, said Justine, in a strangled voice. 'Because you ATE THEM ALL.

It was all she could do to keep food in the house. No sooner would she carry the shopping bags in from the car than the twins would start rummaging in them, pulling out packs of biscuits and eating them before she had a chance to put them away. It was like living with gannets.

'That's our purpose, Steve had told her, only the other day. 'Our role in life is basically just to eat.

'And my role in life is to fill the fridge for them?' Justine had wailed to John.
