America.gov launched today--a DOGE initiative to use AI to deliver public services. Child lying facedown on a frozen lake as the image accompanying the question: "How can I invest in my child's future" is just incredible. Way to go AI
Image of a child lying facedown on a froze lake. above is the portal where you ask AI questions about government services. the question matching this image is: "How can I invest in my child's future?"

This is very powerful. But I want to note that I'm flummoxed by Americans reaching to Germany 80 years ago. I mean *GITMO is still open.* And ICE has a large number of returning US soldiers from that war. It strikes me as an insistent refusal to face US militarism.

Just a few years ago, Turkey and Erdoğan were labeled an exceptionally belligerent country and an authoritarian leader. Now it's clear that this regime has been enabled, encouraged, and strengthened by Western countries, which are also charting their own autocratic tactics in domestic politics.

Today I learned the hard way that icloud has stopped backing up files and remains a "syncing" service only. I was scolded by an Apple engineer on the phone for not backing up my files on four different hard drives and not reading terms carefully (!) What kind of scam is this?

The top frame is from 2015, when French meteorologists did a “forecast” from a #climate heated August 2050 - a warning on what could possibly happen in 35 years time. Bottom frame: well, it’s happened in barely a decade, only it’s already *much* worse than predicted. It’s a runaway train.

Folks going #ICA26 in Cape Town: if you’re still around on June 9th, please join me at the African Centre for Cities where I will talk about Smart as a City @icahdq.bsky.social
Please join us for a brownbag by Burcu Baykurt, an Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, whose research explores how digital infrastructures reshape and perpetuate urban inequalities.
She will present her latest book ‘Smart as a City: The Politics of Test-bed Urbanism’; the session will be facilitated by Nancy.

Smart as a City draws on ethnographic fieldwork in Kansas City, Missouri, where Google piloted a citywide gigabit network and city officials launched several smart city projects in the 2010s. Through cases including public-housing residents’ quiet refusal of “free” gigabit internet, the city’s turn to predictive analytics that largely confirmed the obvious, and public–private strategies for managing failure without naming it, the book reframes test-bed urbanism as a mode of local governance that works through civic aspiration, deliberate ignorance, and municipal politics. It argues that urban disparities are not an unintended consequence of the smart city; they are the foundation upon which it is built.

But that partly happens because the UK only processes visa applications thru a third party company with zero clear instructions to navigate that company's website. Applicants are scrambling to get the application right because one mistake/typo may trigger a rejection.
