The method behind the preprint is available in phyloPSS, our R package—currently in beta. Given a continuous phenotype and a phylogeny, it fits an evolutionary background, scores every species pair, and helps identify both unusually strong contrasts and the phylogenetic scales at which they occur.

New #preprint : we introduce Phenotype Shift Scores (PSS), a pairwise framework for locating exceptional phenotypic differentiation across a phylogeny. Across 153 primate traits, morphology shows deeper-than-expected shifts.

For brain mass adjusted for body size, the strongest PSS contrasts were concentrated among cercopithecid monkeys. After fitting the model within the family, 14 of the 15 highest-scoring pairs involved species from the same genus, especially Macaca, Papio and Trachypithecus. 3/4

We applied PSS to 153 continuous phenotypes in primates (pgarchive.github.io). Each trait showed its own pattern across phylogenetic scales. Morphology stood out: the strongest differences in body and brain mass were concentrated at deeper splits than expected. 2/4
