Of all my mentors, the relationship with my PhD advisor was easily the most complex. My Master’s and postdoc mentorships have been great, which makes my PhD experience even more confusing. 4 years later, I still don't fully understand what happened—just that heavy feeling of never being enough.

In 1973, Stevie Wonder released Innervisions—and played nearly every instrument on most of the tracks himself. Just three days after the album’s release, Stevie was in a near-fatal car crash that left him in a coma. When he woke up, Innervisions was already being hailed as a masterpiece.

I'm very happy with my Postdoc in Cuernavaca, what a great city, great lab team and with a lot of data and results to write. PD. A new pre-print is coming before the year ends.

GBE | A Deep Dive into the Globin Superfamily of Sharks, Skates, and Rays: Contrasting Patterns of Gene Loss and Retention Relative to Bony Vertebrates

Walt et al. leveraged genomic and transcriptomic datasets to investigate the evolutionary history of the globin gene superfamily in cartilaginous fishes. The illustration depicts representatives from the three major lineages of cartilaginous fishes: the whale shark (top), the giant manta ray (right), and the elephant fish (left). The three cartilaginous fishes are surrounding an illustration of the tertiary structure of a hemoglobin subunit. The illustration was prepared by Amber E. McDonald.

Echinoderms already undergo large-scale metamorphosis during larval development, so there are lots of gene 'switches' that produce different patterning. The loss of a few of these (say, for "trunk") creates an animal that is a sort of "Oops, All-Arms!" body plan.
