I feel like this needs to be emphasized more. AI is not sentient. It is a program reliant on LLMs to mimic “thinking,” and whenever an AI program performs a function the company wants to disavow for PR reasons, it’s suddenly “rogue.”

We're a society plagued by bad faith and widespread indulgence of it. Say "free speech" while unsubtly meaning "I say whatever I want, you have to listen, and you can't say anything I don't like back." Voila, a Free Speech Crisis! Here, anti-civility groups say "civility." And the money flows in.

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

I take a similar approach with my students, and it’s just an unfortunate reminder that higher ed has been reduced to noting more than job training and not an opportunity to become a well-rounded and informed individual whose personality can be more than their job.

This is a revelation to me. Are most history depts not already "service depts"? I assumed they were. In any given year I might teach 500 students, most of them in the intro surveys, and maybe 25 of those 500 are history majors. But it's important to note how admins set these classes up to fail.

In the late 19th century, the RR industry was allowed to “regulate itself,” & refused to adopt new innovations for coupling & braking & chose to continue employing people who were maimed & killed performing the jobs. It took an act of Congress to force RRs to adopt the life-saving technologies.

We need a reckoning on education, from pre-K to higher ed. Nothing short of an entire overhaul of the system that needs to be AI-resistant, inclusive and accessible to all; reimagined as the journey to acquire knowledge to learn more about the world and ourselves, and far more than a step to a job.

@courtneymilan.com I just pulled this from a post over on Facebook, felt like it might be info worth sharing...
From Laura Resnick:

"Absolutely furious right now.

The Anthropic settlement admin, in the huge AI copyright infringement case, is sending claimants information about claim disputes, disagreements or confusion over allocation of the settlement funds, etc.

Someone using the name "Stephen Edgington" is claiming 100% ownership and 100% of the settlement $ for more than 20 of my copyrighted books. I've never heard of this person, and I'm the sole copyright holder in every instance. So I have to upload my copyright documentation for every damn book to refute his fraudulent claim."From Laura Resnick (cont'd):

"I'm also writing to the settlement admin, with copyright evidence attached, to report "Stephen Edgington" for fraud and urge them to pursue this matter and hold that "claimant" accountable. I assume "he" is filing a 100% claim to the books of dozens (hundreds?) of writers in hopes of receiving Anthropic settlement money to which he has no right whatsoever, in instances where the actual copyright holders or their heirs have NOT filed a claim and so there is no one to challenge his fraud."
