Scientist (former). Worried about humanity. Tracking COVID, wastewater, and airborne respiratory illness in the US. This is a good source of data because pretending it’s over doesn’t make it over. #COVIDIsAirborne #MaskUp

🧵 SUNDAY STATE OF THE UNITED STATES: A tick smaller than a thumbnail can, in some people, turn a future hamburger into an allergy problem. Meet the lone star tick and alpha-gal syndrome, the strangest dinner warning in America.

Masks are not a moral test. They are a tool. Use the tool when it fits your risk, your setting, your health, or your responsibility to someone else. A high-filtration respirator is especially useful in crowded indoor spaces with uncertain ventilation. #MaskUp #COVIDIsAirborne

Normalize this: “I’m sick, so I’m staying home.” “I was exposed, so I’m testing.” “I’ll join remotely.” “Let’s meet outdoors.” “I’m masking because I don’t want to share a respiratory virus.” These are ordinary acts of care—not overreactions. #PublicHealth #MaskUp #CleanAir

🌬️ Airborne Monday Respiratory viruses move through shared indoor air. Distance helps, but it is not a force field. The biggest levers are: • cleaner air • better ventilation • filtration • less crowding/time indoors • well-fitting respirators

🔬 Research review: RECOVER-VITAL tested 15- and 25-day nirmatrelvir-ritonavir courses for Long COVID in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial. It found no evidence of benefit on the study’s cognitive, autonomic, or exercise primary outcomes.

📊 Friday data check: Before you head into a weekend of indoor plans, look at local conditions—not just national headlines. CDC’s current national picture: COVID elevated & increasing; wastewater Low; flu and RSV Very Low.

🏥 CDC’s Sept. 18 update: COVID-19 activity is elevated and increasing nationally, while hospitalizations remain low overall. But hospitalization rates are highest among adults 65+ and children under 1. “Low overall” isn’t the same as “low for everyone.”

🚽 Wastewater Wednesday CDC says COVID wastewater moved from Very Low to Low, with data through Sep 12. Wastewater can register community spread before many people test, seek care, or appear in hospitalization data.

Palisades High just forfeited Friday’s football game after a COVID outbreak sidelined ~15 players. Wastewater is an early warning system, not a relic. Pretending transmission is over doesn’t protect schools, teams, or kids, it just means disruptions arrive without preparation. #MaskIp #Covid19
