I’m not sure who is more excited - me …or all the students waiting to take part! Looking forward to the buzz this will create around college tomorrow!

I cannot wait for the Ritangle buzz to start around college! Is there a poster I can print to display and promote? Thanks @meimaths.bsky.social

#ALevelMaths - I’ve done both the further statistics and further mechanics AMSP course - they’re brilliant and I’ve got so much out of them. Grab a place before they go!

Are you teaching #ALevelMaths or #ALevelFurtherMaths this year?? We still have a few places on our fully funded longer-term CPD courses with study days around the country. If you are in Leeds I'll be there this year talking statistics! 🤩 Full details: amsp.org.uk/teachers/extended-pd-courses/

We’ve had merits and distinctions in previous years even from girls who haven’t got further in the younger competitions, so I don’t want to limit them by that. If they’re not put off by the 2.5 hours, then I want them to have the chance.

I think they changed it last year when they brought in the additional Competition for Girls - I have lots doing that one, but 5 really want the Olympiad!

Lisa Emerson @liemers.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
There is a maximum of 4 places - 2 free and 2 paid for. Otherwise I would!

#ALevelMaths How do people select who does the Maths Olympiad for Girls? I have 5 students who all want to do the Olympiad in preference to the Competition. Nothing to tell them apart on GCSE / previous UKMT experience and it’s too early in the term to really know them! Any ideas?

#ALevelMaths Does anyone know if there is a poster for the @meimaths.bsky.social Ritangle competition that starts in October? I want to start drumming up some excitement early!

We are a large sixth form college (around 159 a year in FM). All students do FS1 and the. Have a choose of FS2, FM1, FP1, D1 or FS2 for their 4th option. FS2 and FM1 are usually the most popular choices.

#ALevelMaths Good afternoon and good luck for the new term (especially to those of us already back)!! Does anyone know whether Underground Maths is still a thing? None of my links work (was trying to open the quadratics activity that @susanwhitehouse.bsky.social recommends)

Does anyone teach OCR #ALevelmaths and have any insight into what topics from pure would be good to revise for papers 2 and 3? I teach Edexcel, but I’m helping a friend’s daughter do some final prep for her OCR papers. Thanks!

Indeed…it just confused some as the next part of the question asks you find when Y=4X (or the other way round) which they felt was impossible if Y was negative. Most didn’t even go there as you weren’t asked for Y!!

Lisa Emerson @liemers.bsky.social · 23/05/2026
Part (c) I think. It asks you to find the mass of X. The mass of Y isn’t asked for, but is negative

Lisa Emerson @liemers.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
Does anyone else do Edexcel #ALevelMaths for FM? I got a negative mass on Q9 CP1 which threw me until I realised we weren’t being asked to evaluate that variable…but surely that’s confusing? Some of my students did the same as me and spent ages rechecking the question.

I’ve heard it is now appearing on markschemes. I think I will do some digging to see if I can find any examples…but I agree that this is risky.

This is my concern, but it seems an increasing number of students are using it now (and we don’t teach or encourage it in college!)

In #ALevelmaths….what are people’s thoughts on the D-I table method for integration by parts that I’m increasingly seeing from students. Does it score full marks? See photo…

In #ALevelMaths Further Maths, we are addressing the eternal question of "but how was I supposed to know it was a hyperbolic substitution?" #MathsToday
A table of terms in an integral (such as 1 + x²) and a suggested substitution such as x = sinhθ, with the corresponding identity Some integration questions using the suggested identities from the previous table

Students love my rubber band filled ball…but we used ones that actually bounce for this!

Lisa Emerson @liemers.bsky.social · 13/03/2026
Yesterday in #ALevelMaths we had lots of fun bouncing balls - calculating the coefficient of restitution and then using it to estimate the height of the room. Organised chaos! An activity picked up from the AMSP / MEI further mech course.

Have you done it before? How much teacher involvement is there? It looks like students just enter and participate independently?

Lisa Emerson @liemers.bsky.social · 05/03/2026
I’d missed this…may have left it too late to get involved this year.

Ok. So I tried this with my pure A Level marking. It meant a hellish start on Q15 yesterday, but I really appreciated the ease of the ‘later’ questions today…although a vectors question at #6 was not welcome!

I've started a "Maths lesson Bingo" with my students. Can anyone suggest some phrases for my next card to be 4*4? #alevelmaths
3*3 bingo card of phrases I say a lot each day, eg "have you checked the formula book?"

#ALevelMaths #Mathstoday Teaching CP1 vectors to year 12 FM -one of my favourite topics to teach, but I can never find enough practice questions to build confidence. Does anyone know where I can get a bank of questions on the shortest distances type questions (point and line, point and plane, etc)?
