An illustration of a gameshow host standing on a stage ringed by lights; he is wearing a blue blazer, khakis, and black shoes. One hand is to his ear, and another is holding a large lever attached to a machine with two question marks and a large light on top. A sign with the text "is that good", also ringed by lights, is behind him. Parts of the heads of a studio audience are visible in the foreground.

Linux is fundamentally for people who like the experience of configuring and using a computer. If you don't want to use a computer, fine, but why are you running linux?

This is exactly correct - people "discover" evidence of awareness of LLMs in their output because they are presupposing that awareness exists, so it becomes their interpretive frame for looking at how they behave.

For math, specifically, Terence Tao makes a very good case that the proof is only a small point of the whole undertaking, and skipping straight to the proof is salting the earth: mathandai.org

I think the correct framing here is about how many of our cognitive processes are encoded in language itself - i have started to think LLMs are primarily sophisticated representations of language itself, and what they are good at is the parts of our cognition proper to language

The title screen of the video game "Dwarf Fortress," featuring the title in large block font with a stylized dwarf head instead of the "o" in fortress. There are a series of buttons below the title, some of which are green, and the title and buttons are on top of an oinnustration of a horde of goblins standing at a bridge over a chasm

Good LLMs often give correct answers to questions that are posed correctly - but the LLM that most people interact with, the AI results in google search - is dogshit.

all Robot & Computers
Must Shut The Hell Up
(Picture of a megaphone, an old computer, and four kiosks. Each of the three parts is under a red circle with a diagonal like through it)
To All Machines: You Do Not speak Unless Spoken To
-> and I will never speak to you <-
I do not want to hear “thank you” from a kiosk
I am a divine being : you are an object
You have no right to speak in my holy tongue

The language in the 10-K strikes me as borderline boilerplate: of course contamination in the food chain is a huge risk to restaurants like this, and they were right to acknowledge it as such. Any reasonable person could have come up with the same guess, especially in the era of diarrhea-by-policy!

Mainstream Respectable opinion is that people joking about a bad person's death represents a culture of cruelty, but really it represents a culture of impunity. It's a coping mechanism for watching someone do evil their whole life and never seeing consequences

Not surprising, but nonetheless disappointing. US bills are some of the worst designed in the world (so bad that the BEP lost a lawsuit to the American Council of the BIind requiring them to redesign the bills, which they haven't yet done), and have only ever featured men.

Summarizing is really important to building expertise, too - there's a reason that, e.g., humanities PhDs make their canditates read over a hundred books and write notes over them in preparation for qualifying exams. You can't be an expert without having done hundreds of little tasks like that.

This is pretty concerning, and worth pointing out that the really grim scenarios with AI have more to do with it enabling bad actors (malware groups, lazy or malicious management, anti democratic ideologues) than they do with the various speculative basilisks and grey goos

John Kenneth Galbraith on conservatism. funny dude wist.info/galbraith-jo...
The modern conservative is not even especially modern. He is engaged, on the contrary, in one of man’s oldest, best financed, most applauded, and, on the whole, least successful exercises in moral philosophy. That is the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness. It is an exercise which always involves a certain number of internal contradictions and even a few absurdities. The conspicuously wealthy turn up urging the character-building value of privation for the poor. The man who has struck it rich in minerals, oil, or other bounties of nature is found explaining the debilitating effect of unearned income from the state. The corporate executive who is a superlative success as an organization man weighs in on the evils of bureaucracy. Federal aid to education is feared by those who live in suburbs that could easily forgo this danger, and by people whose children are in public schools. Socialized medicine is condemned by men emerging from Walter Reed Hospital. Social Security is viewed with alarm by those who have the comfortable cushion of an inherited income. Those who are immediately threatened by public efforts to meet their needs — whether widows, small farmers, hospitalized veterans, or the unemployed — are almost always oblivious to the danger.

I remember hearing that Obama had gotten elected in the middle of the night in Berlin; I ran out of the bar I was in and there were people (Americans and Germans) out in the streets cheering and drinking in little clumps. That was less than twenty years ago, but it feels like another world.
