Last November they dislodged all the parked cars from Hopkins to accommodate the Berkeley Half Marathon. I got to enjoy a psuedo bike lane on Hopkins between Sacramento and California for a couple minutes. The excitement caused me to take positively shit photos of the occasion

Lee-Egan, a Hopkins Street resident, said the opposition is “all about parking.”

“You’re living in a city with other people; you need to make choices that are good for more people than just yourself,” Lee-Egan said. “So it really bothers me that they care more about parking in front of their own houses or parking in front of businesses they like than my kids biking to school safely.”

This is what I see in my head when a self-described "avid cyclist" says they see no need for safe bike infrastructure. Yeah, the current system of hugging the door zone while cars zoom by at 30 mph works for them but not for little kids and seniors.
2 panel comic. Left says "When the infrastructure is only comfortable for a small group of people... only a few will use it." The image is of a chasm between 2 cliffs with a tight rope going across. A man on a bike is teetering across with a speech bubble saying "This isn't so bad." A more diverse group of people on the left cliff standing beside their bikes are saying "Nope. Not a chance!"
The panel on the right says "With infrastructure that is comfortable and safe for most people... fewer people are excluded from using it." It shows the same cliffs and chasm from the left panel but there's a wide bridge with solid-looking guard rails. The same man who was okay with biking on the tight rope is on the bridge now saying "Hmm, this isn't so bad, either" and the other people who were frightened before are biking comfortably on the bridge saying "ahh, much better."

“[Libby] Lee-Egan…installed a traffic counter at her house that sometimes measures drivers whizzing by at 45 [mph], a dangerous condition for any cyclist or scooter rider pedaling alongside them. ‘If it comes down to safety versus parking, we cannot let parking win,’ [she] said. ‘That’s crazy.”
