SILICON VALLEY - The CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic, and GrokAI have released a statement agreeing that claiming artificial intelligence "could potentially kill all humans" sounds much more awesome than just admitting that they blew a fortune on glorified chatbots.

I went away feeling, "yeah why does this remind me of every 50s,60s fantasy book cover art". Oh, this is why. It's also why the more I watch, the more I like it.

"Rococo maximalism." I didn't have a term for it when I saw it earlier today, but now I do. I see it now, and with a definition I can step back to the definition's distance and see it as what it is. It's a hell of an art choice, but it's deliberate. Wind Waker was a hell of an art choice, too.

That's fun and interesting and makes me think about things I wouldn't have on my own, whether I like it or not. It also doesn't really affect my memories of the game and my own "imaginings." It's like seeing yet another staging or filming of Hamlet or something

I enjoy seeing them make choices I would not personally make, especially considering it's the same company and even some of the same people who worked on the original, and super-especially when they are obviously skilled art-makers. Why interpret it this way or that? Why do it this way not that way?

Liam Berry @liamberry.ca · 09/09/2026
This is pretty spot on. I don't care about canonical remakes per se but I love *reinterpretation* and I'm interested to see what this team's "imagining" is even though it's 100% not the "imagining" that's been living in my head for >2 decades. I wanna see inside other creatives' braiiiiiinnnnssss

It is 2001. Wind Waker is shown. Everyone complains about the art style. It is 2019. Link's Awakening's remake is shown. Everyone complains about the art style. It is 2026. OOT's remake is shown. Everyone complains about the art style.

if they did this to Wind Waker (or even skyward sword) I'd be grumpy as hell though

I'm just seeing people say it has no art direction and I'm gonna push back on that
120
Liam Berry @liamberry.ca · 08/09/2026
Sure. All I was saying is that the OoT remake has a really distinct art direction and style beyond just "realism/high def/lots of triangles" I don't love all of it but it's still clear artistry with a lot of thought behind it and I'm interested to see how they interpret the world in that style

Liam Berry @liamberry.ca · 08/09/2026
yeah exactly! It's kinda like calling a Baroque painting realistic lol, it's like, those are still extremely stylized and have a really clear artistic intention, framing, posing, use of light and colour, blah blah blah

Liam Berry @liamberry.ca · 08/09/2026
Idk I kinda like the style of the OoT remake. Like yeah, it's exorbitant (and I'd agree that some of the clothing detailing is distracting) but it seems really expressive still, especially in the environments. Kinda like an oil painting. I wouldn't call it very "realistic"

I would love more games to have opening credits the way old movies did (and movies to do that more again, also). Don't hide it all at the end! Put it front and center!

For sure. I strongly feel that if you're a small studio you should be Putting Your Name(s) On Your Game: www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4UF... Obviously a lotta nuance here, especially with bigger teams, but a studio name really obscures the individuals behind a work.. so sign your games!

Our game decides what color everything is by dynamically indexing into a palette based on the red-channel at run time, split evenly into 4 segments. I just noticed the colors we use for drawing stuff isn't evenly distributed, which MOST of the time has no impact
