Chelsea and Man City in the FA Cup final. No other English clubs have systematically ignored, bent or broken the rules like both have done. In terms of trophies won, no other English clubs have been as successful over the past decade and a half either. The moral of the story - is that there is none.

Me this morning: Carrick is a sensible short-term option to bring some much-needed stability to the end of the season. Offering him the job permanently would be a clear step too far. Me now:

PSG were an irrelevance in European football until a state-backed project transformed them into a symbol of modern football’s moral drift - soft power, sportswashing, and influence beyond the pitch. Good as they are, success built on that model leaves a bitter taste.

Would be nice to hear more media narrative about the fact that 20 years ago, United were plundered solely in order to benefit one already incredibly wealthy family. We knew then it would be a disaster; we just didn’t know how long it would take. Utterly shameful that it was allowed to happen.

Thank you to @nqatpod.bsky.social for the excellent discussion about the impact of cutting staff on organisations (around 40m in) ie cutting isn’t always commercially sensible. This is in the context of a football club, but it’s important listening for all of us. open.spotify.com/episode/7lVC...

Last time we lost the Europa League Final, I’d just worked 50 hour weeks for months & months; left work at 8pm on the day of the Final to watch us lose on penalties; got up at 6am to get back to work early; & anti-United songs were chanted at me in a random lift. Still, I think I feel worse today.

It was 5pm and he was most displeased I had not immediately switched off the laptop. (To be fair, you have to admire his strong work/life boundaries).
A Staffy with white fur and light brown patches round his dark brown eyes has his head on the keyboard of my laptop. He looks at the camera (me) in a way that strongly suggests he wants a walk and feels the laptop should be switched off immediately.

From today’s Popbitch I’m sure we’ve all encountered a man like Sir Jim 🫠
A screenshot of an article on the Popbitch newsletter. The text says:

Putting on a united front

Man United's Sir Jim Ratcliffe is not a man short of confidence in his own opinions. He's very happy wandering round the club giving his remaining staff the benefit of his advice.

Even so, it was something of a surprise to those around him when, on one visit to the medical facilities, he opined to a club physio who was treating an injured player that he was doing the massage all wrong. And - unlike Sir Jim - obviously didn't know how to massage properly.
