Hello #birdoftheday peeps! Thank you to @helenbennett.bsky.social for her #divers theme today! Here is a common loon couple on an autumn lake in New Hampshire.

A male loon, with black back speckled with a white pattern, a white chin and front of neck, and black head and strong bill faces left, while a female behind him faces right. She has white chin, and lighter bill, with a tan head and brown back flecked with white. The water ripples gently around the couple, reflecting the red fall leaves of New England interspersed with darker browns and some green, and a splash of light on the right hand side of the frame from top to bottom.

Hello #birdoftheday friends! For today's theme #paridae from @robcrank68.bsky.social I'm sharing a chestnut-backed chickadee from a recent visit to northern CA.

A small bird in the tit family, a chestnut-backed chickadee, sits in the mid-left of the photo, leaning forward on a horizontal, thin brown branch of a red alder tree. The bird has a deep brown crown, a white cheek, and a black bib. It's namesake chestnut brown stretches across its back toward grey-brown wings and tail. Good morning #birdiftheday friends! Thanks to @atlanticbirding.bsky.social for today’s #herons&egrets theme. Here is a whistling heron on the (big, blue) wing in Brazil.

A large and largely blue heron flies across the frame from left to right. Its broad wings obscure most of its body and its head, with black - tipped orange beak is just visible against a background of tall grass with a few shrubs.

Against a backdrop of large, tropical plant leaves and brown tree trunks a pair of light tan Inca doves with pink feet nestle together. Their perch is a cut V trunk covered in grey-green lichen.

Hello #birdoftheday folks! @alan678.bsky.social has chosen today’s theme #inflight and I have an action pic with a pop of forget from a resident (until migration) young male ruby-throated hummingbird.

A large, white wading bird with black legs and a long orange spear of a bill has caught a small fish in the tropical Caribbean shallows. Hello #birdoftheday pals! August was a wonderful month, but not my birdiest of months! For @robcrank68.bsky.social's #bestofthemonth I'm sharing this far-off picture of a harlequin duck because it was a lifer for me, and an unusual bird for its northern CA appearance.

A dark duck with a grey bill and a white spot on its cheek, at the back of its head, and on its wingtips sits near the middle of a sloping, seaweed and guano-covered rock in the middle the frame surrounded by small ripples in a relatively calm bay in the Pacific Ocean.

#BestoftheMonth for August 2026 for #BirdoftheDay. This is a Cooper's hawk pushing off on a bright, clear day at #BolsaChicaEcologicalReserve.

We see a large gray branch bisecting the otherwise light blue frame (sky background). We see, from below, a juvenile Cooper's hawk just taking flight. We see the buffy underside with vertical dark brown streaking. We see the yellow feet pushed straight out behind the bird as it has just pushed off the branch. The wings are a mottled brown and black and are flexed back over the bird's shoulders. S/he looks off to her left and gives us a view of her right, yellow eye. The underside her tail, white with horizontal brown bars, is also visible.

Hello #birdoftheday friends! For today's theme of #CoastalandRiver offered by @alan678.bsky.social here are two black oystercatchers I saw hunting for morsels along the Pacific coast in northern California.

Hello #birdoftheday friends! I am loving all of your #simple backgrounds. Such an interesting theme from @atlanticbirding.bsky.social! Here is a western wood pewee from my last week's trip to Northern California.

A small, sharp-billed grey bird, a western pewee in the flycatcher family, sits at the tip of a grey-brown snag rising from the base of the photo to the center. The background is an entirely white sky. It was darting out to catch insects and returning to its post.

Gary Green Woodpecker was surprised to see the paparazzi walk round the corner, with their lenses primed and ready to take his photo before he'd brushed his plumage.
So he shouted at them to wait until he was ready, but those damned paparazzi never listen because that doesn't get them their stories.
So Gary didn't hang around long because he doesn't like those who don't listen to him, sorry but not sorry Gary 😂

Gary & Gloria Goosander were drifting past each other like ships in the night, and that was because Gary didn't listen to Gloria about what she wanted from the beauty parlour.
Meaning Gary came home with all the wrong beauty products that Gloria didn't ask for, and what made it worse was Gary turned and said "well you should have gone yourself" which really annoyed Gloria.
I'm sure most males have been there Gary, and she will get over it eventually.

Gary Goldcrest was flirting from branch to branch looking for a mate, but he wasn't having much luck.
And he tried blaming that on the paparazzi following him around, but the paparazzi weren't having none of that and told him to look in the mirror.
But not knowing why Gary said "have you", to which they said "yes" and we don't have food all down us, which makes you look like a tramp, Gary.... with a smile on their face.

Sammy Short Eared Owl was flying over the fields on the prowl for food, while also watching out for those sneaky paparazzi.
Which he hadn't spotted already snapping away as he banked to his left, in the direction where he spotted some movement in the low cut grass in the field beside the road.
Sadly for Sammy it wasn't something he could eat as it was some rubbish moving in the grass due to the moderate winds, which made Sammy and the paparazzi angry because people should take their rubbish home with them or at least bin it.
