For the first time in I don’t know how long I batched lunches for this week, and yesterday a water main on my campus exploded so campus is closed for the week.

Everyone should cite my waifu paper because it’s really funny to have the word waifu appear in the scientific literature. It’s also genuinely important to the future of relationships, but funny too. My supervisor today: “put me on one of those papers so I can also be one of the weird kids”

It’s starting to be genuinely concerning to me the number of high schoolers and undergrads who believe they are doing publishable solo research because they are using AI to write the paper.

If generative AI tools generate inappropriate language, plagiarized content, biased content, errors, mistakes, incorrect references, or misleading content, and that output is included in scientific works, it is the responsibility of the author(s). 2/

We have recently clarified our penalties for this. If a submission contains incontrovertible evidence that the authors did not check the results of LLM generation, this means we can't trust anything in the paper. 3/

The penalty is a 1-year ban from arXiv followed by the requirement that subsequent arXiv submissions must first be accepted at a reputable peer-reviewed venue. 4/

Examples of incontrovertible evidence: hallucinated references, meta-comments from the LLM ("here is a 200 word summary; would you like me to make any changes?"; "the data in this table is illustrative, fill it in with the real numbers from your experiments") end/"

So much science is moving forward because grad students are taking on peer review that senior faculty are not interested in. And a nonzero amount of this is probably scientific malpractice since grad students don’t have as much experience finding paper red flags. We live in a society.

This Friday (3/27) at 3pm Eastern, I'm going to have @leshner.bsky.social on the channel! Connor is a SUPER cool psychologist who'll be sharing some of his work on parasocial relationships with fictional characters, and doing a Q&A with chat! Hope to see you there! www.youtube.com/live/nKPERrl...
A Youtube thumbnail for the stream. On the left is a stylized drawing of a cat in sunglasses labeled "Connor Leshner."
On the right, Myelin is pointed excitedly at the cat image. Text above their heads reads "Talk + Q&A!"

It fascinates me that humans want this connection so much. It's SETI on planet Earth. And that there's an openness to consciousness in machines, but less so* to identifying it in most sentient, intelligent, socially complex non-human animals. *I'm talking public, not researchers in either case

I just received a review that was really really mean but had a great info in it about how to improve my paper. It’s really hard to keep going back to that review to pull the important insights when I have to read between the lines. It’s an interesting dichotomy that academia can be so (un)helpful.

Got a paper reject where reviewer 1 said I overlooked a chapter in a handbook I should’ve included, and when I went to get the book from my uni library, the librarian told me not a single library in the entirety of Canada has this ($200) book. Kinda betrays anonymity/definition of expertise.

I spoke extensively with the Crimson reporter. She understood the strength of the evidence, and it shows. Odds ratios can be eye-glazing, but let's just say that when 2.5 million kids are studied, and it's still not possible to detect added risk from taking acetaminophen...there's no added risk.

When the dust settles, and if universities have meaningfully survived, it will be worth asking how institutions usually so resistant to thoroughgoing change chose to leap with both feet into an untested technology they didn't understand and didn't know how to use.
