Bluesky's head of trust and safety runs all replies through an LLM to decide who to block which leads to him creating a perfect sycophantic bubble for himself. Someone really does not understand his job. Bluesky Corp is a clown show.

It feels like journals are only a filter for baseline quality, there really is a niche out there for people to personally curate reading lists for others. There is a cottage industry for this in other content like movies, so it would be cool for an academic to get paid to specialize in this way

Ironically, my original interview with the journalist I spoke with was primarily about how "inconsistencies" can come from gender bias in investigatory processes and then be blamed on survivors. It was the inspiration for this thread--but none of these points made it into any USA Today article:

I actually get my information from people who understand exactly what it is and why it’s a fucking autocorrect slot machine that does nothing but extract. This is hot garbage. Just because I have ethics and a spine doesn’t mean I don’t also engage critical thinking. Slop boosters don’t.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Hyperlink text should make sense when read out of context. Screen reader users can navigate from link to link, and can listen to links in a list. When navigating this way, only the link is read. So "click here" or "read more" won't make sense.

This man is a monster. He seeks out women survivors because he hates them. And he hates them because he hates himself. He has harassed me and other women survivors many times over the years. It must end. He should never have a job anywhere.

LLMs are predictive language models. They do not 'think' or 'feel', they are designed to produce output that looks / sounds like human language. If an LLM produces the phrase, "I feel pain," it is still just output that looks / sounds like human language. There is nothing to explain here.

Power Line, inspired by Nintendo Power Line, had me using a rotary phone to answer folks’ questions about a game I didn’t play. There’s no link but I’m a fan of the way they used physical elements in the story to immerse the player at least lightly, it was a nice touch.

One last little note: CHI STAR wound up being a real catalyst for both of these works. If a committee member didn’t tell me this, Tompkinsia would not be part of my bold swings, and I would not have run into Sophia and been able to donate brain to this broader and equally important design space. 💫

Tompkinsia is another bold swing in commentary augmentation, this time in the direction of critical reading. Uncertainty in augmented translation for all language learners needs our attention, this is a first step in that direction. dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/...
