Just found myself in the weird position of turning down an academic job offer. I’ve decided not to apply for them before (recently enquiring about a research role I was told the ‘research budget’ came out of your salary) but never encountered t&cs so awful and exploitative that I’ve declined one

Has the time come for us binned staff to start setting up our own actual universities? Leave the wreckage of neoliberal academia and publishing to the corporate warlords and their enablers and start again? I switch between this thought and settling down with the cat for a quiet life.

Euphemisation has been a key strategy for the far right to escape the margins and return to the mainstream for half a century Back in the early 90s, Jean-Marie Le Pen pushed for the term "populism" to replace "extreme right" or "fascist". It was then taken up by mainstream actors and here we are

Brilliant piece from @hannahforsyth.bsky.social . Of course, nobody or almost nobody reads academic “outputs”. Their function is to get jobs, secure promotion, avoid redundancy, get better scores on dubious metrics. Which makes AI almost the perfect tool for the unscrupulous professor.

If you can't be bothered writing it, I can't be bothered reading it.
The producerist vision of AI seems to assume an endlessly expanding market for reading. And reading. Well. It is rather more than a market.

When officials say shit like this, they're not thinking about Oxford and Cambridge. They're thinking about the post-92s and the lower-ranked Russell Group schools—in other words, the universities that serve working class & BIPOC students whom the "political strategy" would love to ignore completely.

It will never stop being funny to me that the street fighter subreddit has a much better, well reasoned ai policy vis a vis literally all universities.
Hi, thanks for posting! We do appreciate you thinking of us even though we have to moderate.

Our stance on all AI generated content (Images, Video, Voiceovers, and whatever else LLM based AI gets up to in the future):

At best, they are approximations of street fighter characters as the AI has no clue what it is trying to create. Because of this, there is no street fighter content so they are not allowed. (rule 1)

Also, they aren't allowed per our source rule. As AI sources cannot be tracked, we must assume that they use uncredited sources in the learning data. (rule 5)

Finally, AI images, video, text, and voiceovers are barely any different than posting a screenshot of a google search. The level of effort is so low that we consider it spam (rule 3).

Because of these reasons, AI art and other AI content is not allowed.

If you would like to contact the moderators about this removal, you can do so here.

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.

It seems a good day to remind people that in the UK 3 times as many people work in Indian restaurants or for McDonalds as in the whole coal and steel industry. 5 times as many are academic staff at universities. If Labour does not understand its electorate, there is no way to appeal to it.

A good summary why UK HE has ended up in such a mess. I’d also add the growth of a managerial layer who refuse to take any responsibility for things they are responsible for; fall in available research funding, which wastes huge amounts of labour; and the pointless hamster wheel of REF! 🫠

📣Call for abstracts 📣 If you do Critical Security/Terrorism Studies, join our #EISAPEC26 section. We welcome papers, panels, or roundtables. Feel free to get in touch with either myself or @marinegueguin.bsky.social if you have any queries. Deadline is 19 Feb. eisa-net.org/abstract-sub...
This section showcases research that critically analyses the politics of (counter)terrorism and security. We invite papers, panels, and roundtables covering intersectional critiques of international and domestic counter-terrorism policies, critical knowledge production, and methodological innovations and challenges in critical research.

In addition to this, we welcome contributions looking at the practicalities of critically researching terrorism, safeguarding issues for both the researchers and their subjects, the challenges of publishing critical work, and communicating with mainstream audiences.

We will also provide space to focus on academic freedom and discuss how scholars can undertake research-led teaching and bring criticality into the classroom. Given the attacks on academic freedom, especially on scholars involved in Palestine solidarity work, we must also address the need to embody the ethos of scholar-activism in the current climate and discuss how critical research and activism can survive in the neoliberal academy.

If you have any questions about this section, please get in touch with us:
