Government has confirmed the investigation into the Tees Valley Combined Authority. Ministers say "they have remaining concerns about risks arising from the authority’s high levels of debt, leadership and governance arrangements".

The 2024 government review into Teesworks etc criticised her for not only failing to declare potential conflicts of interest, but for not even recognising they existed. Ironically the re-organisation of TVCA after that review made her role redundant because of those conflicts.

Leigh Jones @leighsus.bsky.social · 15h

The chief exec of TVCA who oversaw all of the contentious business dealings at Teesworks was Julie Gilhespie. She had no public sector experience before joining TVCA and became its head a year after joining. She left at the end of 2024 with a £55k redundancy payment and £153k pension top-up.

The government is going to investigate the financial governance of Tees Valley Combined Authority. It comes three years after the Conservatives launched a review after allegations of corruption at the Teesworks regeneration scheme.

TVCA is a real issue policy-wise for the government because it shows you can't just hand unchecked powers to devolved authorities, which is probably good overall, but bad for Burnham's desire to move quickly.

I can't really compare patches as I'm hyperlocal and lack the expertise (one for you, @jenwilliamsft.bsky.social!) I think gov was probably hoping TVCA would sort itself out, but everything coming out over the last year has just compounded all the issues they've had in sorting it out.

Leigh Jones @leighsus.bsky.social · 14/10/2026

After the government issued a Best Value Notice in April 2025 it has transpired that TVCA has issued more than £620m in loans without any paperwork. Large parts of those loans are unlikely to ever be repaid according to auditors.

For some reason I was reading up on the UK's fossil fuel reserves the other day. We've already extracted around 90% of our oil and gas. More extraction just kicks the can down the road for, what, another 5-10 years? What happens after that? What does new drilling buy time for?

It is very interesting that the Mail’s story on Michael Gove’s recent ex-girlfriend being charged with CSAM offences has been memoryholed two days after it was published. Public records show she appeared at Oxford Combined Court centre on September 30 and pleaded not guilty.

I understand the desire to speak well of the dead, and am sure that Archer, like all of us, was a mix of good and bad. But the tendency to indulge dishonesty, so long as it's by a loveable scamp, has done real damage to British politics. We should be a bit wary of the "isn't he a card?" thing.

RIP Jeffrey Archer, not a day goes by when I don't think about the judge in his 1987 libel case (which Archer "won" by doing a bunch of perjury) summing up for the jury by going "would a guilty man have such a hot wife". one of the most insane legal moments of all time

Archer is yet another example that there are no penalties for failure in British public life.

But his time behind bars and his political disgrace did not terminate his career at Westminster, and he returned to the red benches of the House of Lords, until he retired in 2024.
