Has it ever, in the history of opinionated women, been a welcome tactic for a man she doesn’t know to come into her mentions to tell her to moderate her tone? Has this ever once worked out the way the condescending man has envisioned?

what do you call it when the president steals an unfathomable amount of wealth from the treasury and then declares it illegal to investigate him

I’m filled with white-hot rage at Olga Tolarczuk. I’ve spent every day of three decades struggling with my art. The art lives in the struggle; the product is only the last traces of the art. If you’re not in the struggle, you’re not making art. All respect I’ve had for her has instantly vanished.

Your grandma uses gen-AI? Mock her gently but relentlessly. Your students use it? Mock them savagely. Your favorite writer uses it? Mock her loudly and whenever she appears in public, because with the use of it, she has become a tool of the fascist oligarchs who want to kill us all.

If we actually want to appreciate moms, we should be providing free childcare, healthcare, and guaranteed income for stay-at-home parents to put more money in families’ pockets and ensure no SAHP is reliant on a partner for their economic security. Idk I think that’s better than 15% off a vacuum.

The most predictable thing about my post blaming Substack for the accelerated collapse of literary media is when people who are personally benefiting from Substack swan in to angrily defend it. This is 100% my point! It’s good for some individuals, massively destructive for the culture at large.

If you use AI to write an email either to me or to my bookstore, we will not be reading your message. It’s getting yeeted into the swamp. If you can’t take the time to do the work yourself, why should we take the time to engage with what you want from us?

for me impeachment isn't what we should be after. this president and most of his cabinet and staff should be prosecuted for corruption, fraud, war crimes, obstruction, and all the various crimes they have committed. i will only vote for a presidential candidate in 2028 who commits to this.

A very good thread about journalists and AI, much of which also applies to writers of nonfiction books. We are being told, with increasing frequency and stridency, that we "just don't get" how AI can help us, by people who are manifestly not interested in helping us. Know your enemy. Hold the line.

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

Maaaaaaybe but LLMs hallucinate tons of shit and if you don't have domain knowledge (which is one big reason a writer might research) then you might not know what your LLM is making up. I tend to stick to primary sources whenever possible; I have a couple of decades of experience with Googling.
