Amelia Earhart was born #OTD in 1897. 🛩️ 1929: Co-founded The Ninety-Nines & was its first president 🛩️ 1932: First woman/second person to fly solo/nonstop across the Atlantic 🛩️ 1935: First person to fly solo from Hawaii to California 🛩️ 1937: Disappeared somewhere over the Pacific #Aviation #AvGeek
A black-and-white historical photograph of legendary American aviator Amelia Earhart (1897–1937) sitting inside the cockpit of an airplane. Positioned in a low-angle shot, Earhart is seen from the chest up with her arm resting on the dark fuselage. She wears a leather aviator cap with her flight goggles pushed up onto her forehead, and a thick, dark, fur-lined flight jacket. Looking up and out of the frame toward the left, she bears a radiant, wide-mouthed smile that highlights her joy and determination. The stark, minimalist background consists of the plane's structure and a bright, overexposed sky, drawing all focus to her expressive face. The composition exudes a triumphant, adventurous mood, serving as an iconic portrait of the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and a pioneer who blazed trails for women in aviation before her tragic disappearance in 1937.

Dr. Patricia Bath overcame sexism, racism & poverty and saved the sight of millions of people. She invented the Laserphaco Probe for cataract treatment, 1986; it was patented in 1988. She co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, 1976. She died #OTD in 2019. #WomenInSTEM
A vibrant color historical photograph capturing the brilliant ophthalmologist, inventor, and academic Dr. Patricia Era Bath (1942–2019) in an office or laboratory setting, radiating an aura of confident intelligence and warm approachability. Occupying the center and right of the shot, Dr. Bath sits facing forward, smiling brightly with a direct, engaging gaze at the camera. She is dressed in a professional white medical lab coat—subtly embroidered with "Dr. Bath" in red cursive on the left lapel—worn over a light blue button-down denim shirt and accented by a polished gold chain necklace. Pens are visible tucked into her left coat pocket. Positioned prominently to her right on the left side of the frame is a large, white medical laboratory microscope or ophthalmic imaging equipment with black eye-pieces. The background shows a white wooden bookshelf packed with colorful medical texts, binders, and stacked papers. This portrait carries immense historical significance, honoring a legendary trailblazer in STEM who became the first Black female doctor to patent a medical device—the revolutionary Laserphaco Probe for cataract treatment—fundamentally restoring sight to millions worldwide.

Physicist Rosalyn Yalow co-invented a super-sensitive test (radioimmunoassay) that uses tiny amounts of radioactive tags to detect exact levels of insulin in blood & won the 1977 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (the 2nd woman ever to win in this category). She died #OTD in 2011. #WomenInSTEM
A black-and-white historical photograph capturing Nobel Prize-winning medical physicist Dr. Rosalyn Sussman Yalow (1921–2011) at work in her laboratory, projecting a mood of warm competence and focused intellect. Dr. Yalow is posed angled toward her crowded workbench, smiling warmly and directly at the camera. She wears a crisp white laboratory coat over a dark blouse accented by a circular pendant necklace. In her right hand, she deftly holds a long, slender glass volumetric pipette, mid-experiment, while her left hand rests steadily near a small glass beaker on the white countertop. The mid-20th-century laboratory setting is dense with scientific equipment, featuring multi-tiered wooden shelves packed with labeled glass reagent bottles, vials, and chemical containers. Boxes of laboratory supplies, including a Kimble brand box, and containers of test tubes cluster in the foreground. This image carries profound historical significance, representing a trailblazing woman in STEM whose co-invention of the revolutionary radioimmunoassay (RIA) technique transformed modern endocrinology and diagnostic medicine, ultimately earning her the 1977 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Healthful plant-based diet, gut enterotype, and cognition in a rural Chinese elderly cohort: A longitudinal multi-omics study
Shen et al. report that a healthful plant-based diet is associated with distinct gut microbiome features and a 12-metabolite signature. The diet-cognition association varied by gut microbiome enterotype, with stronger benefits in individuals with non-Prevotella-dominant enterotypes. These findings suggest that gut microbial context may shape diet-cognition associations in later life.

A formal, black-and-white portrait photograph of Marjory Stephenson, a British biochemist and one of the first two female Fellows of the Royal Society, taken in April 1945.
The image shows Stephenson seated and turned slightly to the viewer's left, looking directly at the camera. She wears dark, round-rimmed glasses, a black dress, and a strand of pearls. Her hair is styled back off her face. The portrait uses soft lighting and a blurred background, common to the photographic style of the time. The photo was taken by Walter Stoneman for the National Portrait Gallery.

She is dressed in a textured navy-blue blazer over a black top, with a bright multicolored floral/paisley scarf tied at the neck. Her arms are crossed confidently in front of her chest.
