The most dangerous thing about AI is not that the machines might one day think. It is that we are being trained, by men with enormous financial gains riding on our acquiescence, to stop thinking for ourselves.

The contrast between the number of media requests I got when rich people on a cruise were facing a deadly, but contained outbreak versus now that some of the poorest people in the world are facing a deadly and devastating epidemic is just so so stark and it just really annoys the hell out of me.

folx, I’ve been working on AI "ethics" for almost a decade now & hate to tell you there’s no such thing as "ethical AI" the only "ethical principle" that works is regulating the shit out of the industry & to take back control of our autonomy, fundamental rights, freedoms & right to exist w/out AI

Happy birthday to #biochemist Marie Maynard Daly (1921-2003), 1st Black woman to earn a PhD in #chemistry in the US! 🐡🧪👩🏿‍🔬 #histsci She made important research contributions to our understanding of the biochemisty of the cell nucleus & cardiovascular issues & the chemistry of histones & protein 🧵
My linocut portrait of Marie Maynard Daly in purples (she’s a young smiling Black woman, wearing earrings, a necklace and a dress, looking at the viewer over her shoulder). Above her to the right is an anatomical heart with a blowout diagram in a circle of a clogged artery and the cholesterol molecule all in red. Next to her on the left in blue are the molecules of the bases which make up DNA and a diagram of a human cell.

I live in Berlin, a city where public transport is (relatively) brilliant. But I don't have a public transport ticket. I don't need it. I jump on my (very ugly) bike and get pretty much anywhere I need to go. The doctors, the supermarket, the theatre, the park... It's an exhilarating freedom.

Jeff Bezos has $222 billion. If he paid my wealth tax this year, we could fund insulin in America for everyone who needs it plus free school lunch for every kid in Texas—and have plenty of money left over. And Bezos would still have $215 billion dollars to spare.

Keep calm and be transparent: advice from scientists who retracted their papers
Retractions correct the scientific record, but they have stigma attached to them. Some in the research community want that to change.

An illustration by the artist Ruth Graham, where the proportions of different elements are connected to their frequency as a response to the question: What have you appreciated about the outdoors recently?'. There is a very large bird in the foreground, along with some small flowers and insects. There are also some trees and roughly 20% of the image is water. The sun is also very large, and it has a smiley face. There is a medium size mountain in the middle left that has 'Things we appreciate in nature' written on it.

This infographic titled "The Women of the Periodic Table" highlights ten women and their contributions to element discovery. A central periodic table marks specific elements in green and orange, with lines connecting them to names and portraits. Featured scientists include Marie Curie (polonium, radium), Marguerite Perey (francium), and Clarice Phelps (tennessine). It traces history from early pioneers like Harriet Brooks to modern teams including Dawn Shaughnessy and Darleane Hoffman.

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

US ICE agents have been using tear gas on protestors in Minneapolis. There's been plenty of tear gas misinformation flying around on social media; here's a summary of the chemistry and the best way to get rid of it (TLDR: water): www.compoundchem.com/2020/06/09/t... #ChemSky 🧪
An infographic titled "Tear Gas: Chemistry, Dispersal Methods & Effects". It details the active agent in tear gas, 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile, showing its chemical structure. It explains dispersal via burning canisters (using charcoal and potassium nitrate) or sprays. Health effects include eye, nose, and respiratory irritation lasting 15–30 minutes. Treatment steps advise moving to fresh air, removing clothing, and flushing with water or saline.

Funny that this argument hasn't washed with them when children's rights groups are telling them age-gating social media access is a bad idea. But now... I've been saying from the start that age-gating is a cop out on regulating platforms properly. Feeling validated (and furious, frankly).

One of my favourite things in the world is sitting down to write a letter. It starts with so much possibility and elements of theatre (selecting the pen/paper, considering the story to tell) and then slowly centres on the person you write to. Given I upgraded to wax seals, the final act is 🔥 too.
