The distant world that is our best hope of finding alien life
A decade ago, we discovered an exceptionally exciting exoplanet that could be the best candidate for hosting alien life. Now we’re about to find out if it really is

To me the cool thing about this image is that the sprinkling of blue stars are in the foreground, some 5 million light years away, while all those gorgeous colorful swirly galaxies are almost unimaginably more distant, out in the far depths of the cosmos. More info: www.stsci.edu/contents/med...

Beautiful! And what’s cool is that the rings are *not* solid objects! As you zoom in you see more and more distinct rings within rings. Each composed of billions of independent bits from tiny up to the size of a house. All clumping and interacting in weird ways!

In February 2021 I took a photo of the lovely spiral galaxy NGC 1566 from my backyard. Then I went back and photographed it again December, later that year. I didn’t realise this but someone mentioned that there was a supernova (SN 2021aefx) in my photos! It’s that new bright star! ⭐️ 💥 🔭
Two tile image of a face-on spiral galaxy. The top image is annotated with NGC 1566, and the bottom image has an arrow indicating a new star appearing below the galaxy, which is the supernova.

I'm happy to share the latest episode of the Dead Planets Society podcast with @chelswhyte.bsky.social and @leahc.bsky.social! I join them as they use their god-like powers to create a geocentric solar system and imagine the consequences. www.newscientist.com/article/2436...
newscientist.com
What would happen if Earth was the centre of the solar system?
Geocentrism, the idea that everything in the universe revolves around Earth, has long been disproven, but this episode of Dead Planets Society is bringing it back with cataclysmic consequences

hey guys check this out
a crude mspaint drawing of a cesium atomic clock diagram showing the hyperfine splitting of the 6s electron level with a frequency of 9,192,631,770 Hz and a wave length of 3.26 cm, which is the international standard for 1 second. rather interestingly, this exceptional precision of the tiny energy splitting (over 1000 times less than the thermal energy of the atom) means that after 1.4 million years we would only be off by 1 second. that's fascinating when you consider that they used to measure time based on earth's orbit, but that's not good enough. there are also rubidium atomic clocks which are less accurate but have the advantage of being much more portable which allows for syncing of cesium clocks. pretty neat! as an author's note, also nice to have a simpler clock to draw for a minute. these intricate clocks are getting to be rather time consuming i must admit. oh the irony.

Could we tweak the solar system to make Pluto a planet again?
Pluto officially lost its planethood in 2006, and this episode of Dead Planets Society is all about bringing it back by making it bigger, faster and better than ever

Is an enormous shield the worst way to protect Earth from asteroids?
There are several reasonable ways to protect Earth from any potential asteroid threats, but in this episode of Dead Planets Society, reason loses out to the idea of a huge orbiting shield

This is a big deal not just exploration-wise but also politically - India and Russia originally intended to collaborate on a lunar lander. India’s independent lander has now made it and Russia’s… didn’t. A major point of pride for ISRO! 🧪🔭

Could a gravitational wave rip apart an entire planet?
When we detect gravitational waves, it’s because they are warping space and time by a tiny amount – but this episode of Dead Planets Society is about making one that is far more powerful

kinda wild how like u can have a wave and it'll act like a particle and then u can have a bunch of those particles and then they'll act like a wave. but maybe they also get squished real close and become a Big particle and u can have a bunch of those acting like waves again or w.e

Last night I was looking at the Moon with the 11yo. I asked, did she know that the light arriving at her eye had bounced off the surface of the Moon just over one second ago? Like, it had been *right there* on the surface? She got very quiet, then got a huge smile.
