Can someone please ask Karoline Leavitt why the Director of White House Personnel refuses to say what country he is from and refuses to complete paperwork for a background check? Can you also ask if “Sergio Gor” is the name on his birth certificate. Seems kinda important.

If there are Democratic Senators who plan on voting for the GOP budget, other than Fetterman and Schumer, they should say so now and articulate their reasoning. Elected officials should not hide their intentions from their own constituents.

It was nice of Musk to include Trump in his first cabinet meeting even though Trump doesn’t really have any responsibilities.

→ Deep budget cuts & program closures coming to a university near you.
Is this the break the glass moment for university administrators who have been silent so far about the attack on science?

Holy crap. While one can argue indirect cost rates were getting out of hand at some institutions, just cutting them to 15% and saying that’s a generous rate because private foundations don’t add more than 10% is “logic” that betrays a complete lack of understanding of how biomedical research works

Note that legal experts say that there is a law that prohibits NIH from making such cuts without the approval of Congress. Since 2017, the annual spending bill for HHS — of which NIH is a part — has included language that prohibits changes to indirect cost rates.

The NIH capping the indirect cost rate (IDC) for grants at 15% can best be described as a direct assault on Universities. It’s such a bureaucratic, innocuous sounding thing that actually means that research universities will be kneecapped. Thousands of employees across the US will lose their jobs.
