Can confirm. I spoke at a conference recently, where the person before me talked about AI. I started my keynote by saying that AI is incompatible with feminism because AI is built on theft and therefore a consent violation. "Gen-AI stole my book. AI is harmful to real people like me." It hit hard.

There's a term we used in higher ed during the early adoption of automation of business processes: "Load-bearing Friction" There's a committee that has to sign off on that FOR A REASON. The reason may no longer be valid, but it didn't just pop into existence out of the head of the Provost.

My theory on "artificial intelligence" is that nothing that doesn't have a lot of friction, nothing which is not embodied, can truly be intelligent. The complexity and friction of living in a physical world cannot be simulated.

I have this vague feeling that we have vastly underestimated the value of friction. So much of modern life is geared towards reducing friction. Amazon is brilliant at it. It's not the best place to shop, but my god, it's the _easiest_. Point, click, be on your way.

Really important point i hadn't seen yet, which is that AI data center proposals are concentrated in gas reservoir basins, bypassing federal permitting altogether by avoiding the need for interstate pipelines. All of the smoke about transmission costs reforms look different in this light.

Exactly. Canada Post is a public service designed to aid the public and improve quality of life. TMX and other pipelines are designed entirely to make a profit. They are not mandated to create public energy or improve quality of life.
