Acentra Health is finally scheduled to begin accepting third-party providers' claims for care given to people in ICE detention, after failing to do so for more than a year. In that time, ICE obligated $133.7M on the no-bid award. And while Acentra got paid, healthcare providers got stiffed.
Timeline graphic dated Sep 21 titled "Announcing Go-Live Dates and Transition Timeline for IHSC's New Claims Processing Services with Acentra Health." Five milestones: Aug 31st, provider orientation webinar and training registration opened. Sept. 14th, live training began, covering provider revalidation and new provider enrollment. Sept. 28th, provider portal go-live, with network provider revalidation and enrollment, new provider enrollment, and claims processing training. Oct. 5th, EDI submissions accepted with new payor ID DIHSC. Oct 12th, claim processing go-live and direct data entry go-live.

#RIP Wendell Berry 💔
Image of Wendell Berry's poem, "The Peace of Wild Things": When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Keep in mind that incarcerated people suffer disproportionately from all types of medical conditions. The U.S. has built a legacy of exploiting and neglecting the needs of vulnerable people.
Graph showing rates of various medical conditions in state prisons vs. the overall U.S. population: Asthma (16.7% vs 8%), Hepatitis B (1.2% vs. 0.4%), Hepatitis C (9.5% vs. 1.7%), HIV or AIDs (1.1% vs. 0.4%).

Delighted that "The Market for Deportation: Private Profits & the Machinery of Removal," will be published by U. Penn. J. Bus. L. in 2027! If you're concerned about the disturbing political economy made by private profiteers in modern immigration removal, read on: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....
Abstract

Although legal scholarship has extensively examined the profit-driven architecture of the American carceral state, the rapidly expanding for-profit apparatus embedded within immigration enforcement remains comparatively underexamined. This Article addresses that critical gap, contending that the deep enmeshment of private capital and public authority has transformed contemporary immigration removal into a monetized "market for deportation:" a financially oriented enterprise where the extraction of profit has become a structural feature of the state's power to exclude. Drawing on the Anglo-American history of banishment and forced expulsion, the Article situates modern detention and deportation within a long historical lineage of private actors deriving wealth from the machinery of removal. It then traces the modern expansion of this privatized infrastructure, illustrating how the federal government has outsourced core administrative functions, from facility operation and surveillance technologies to transportation networks to a diffuse web of for-profit entities, all underwritten by public funds. By providing a detailed political economy account, the Article demonstrates how lobbying, campaign contributions, and revolving-door employment have recalibrated immigration priorities to serve market imperatives. Ultimately, these public-private entanglements have produced an expansive deportation economy that prioritizes the demands of private equity and corporate accumulation over legal restraint or basic human rights.

When academia's stars mistreat people, they're "punished" with relief from teaching, mentoring, and service responsibilities. This frees them to spend more time on the more valued work of research. And dumps less valued responsibilities onto colleagues, making it harder for them to become stars.
In a statement to The Crimson, Summers wrote that the decision to leave was “difficult” and that he remained “grateful to the thousands of students and colleagues I have been privileged to teach and work with since coming to Harvard as a graduate student 50 years ago.”

“Free of formal responsibility, as President Emeritus and a retired professor, I look forward in time to engaging in research, analysis, and commentary on a range of global economic issues,” he added.
