An excerpt from a free Substack serial book called "Beyond Cover 1: Diamond Gamble" by Lavinia Thompson

This was it. She would infiltrate the mysteriously obscure Ruby Spiders. The first law enforcement officer to do so. From a nameless orphan in the crowd to a name in the undercover history books.
She would finally be somebody. Not only the girl without parents. The woman who never knew who she was. Unsure of her footing and place in the world. No longer simply a whimsy flower-obsessed girl who related more to nature than she did people.
No, she would no longer be forgettable. The fragments of her career might come to mean something. Might come together in the way petals did at sunset after laying open to the sky all day.
And she would do it with the surreptitious stealth of night. The same resilience and calm composure of Kira’s reticent character.

Ironically, she'd already asked for alternative means of execution, including hanging. It would have been a lot more merciful than this. Look, I know her crime 1995 was awful. Colleen Slemmer suffered to her death, too. But the death penalty doesn't fix that, imo. #truecrime #ChristaPike

Dwayne nodded. Speak of the devil, he thought, mildly relieved it was only a biker shootout. They wouldn’t recognize him here.
The bullets weren’t meant for him.
As the cracks and roars and screeches died down, Dwayne motioned for Oliver to stay put while he crept up to the window, which remained intact. He waited a few more moments before peeking out the edge of the curtain. The sun hadn’t yet set, the overcast skies still lit up faintly. Leather-covered bodies lay bleeding on the sidewalk, some at the edge of parking lot. His eyes narrowed at the men in suits who approached the scene. He recognized Fedar Brusilov and Borya Radimir, followed by a group of other Russian mobsters, armed with machine guns and shotguns. Dread filled Dwayne’s chest. He gripped his gun handle until his knuckles turned white.

She eventually pulled into the parking lot of a real estate office, as she did every morning at almost nine. Upon stepping out of the car, clutching her bag to her shoulder, she scanned the parking lot and street as I drove past, eyes sharp yet brushing over my car before hurrying to the doors, fumbling for her keys, unlocking the doors, then entering. Her slender figure in a pinstriped, navy blue skirt suit, over a lacy grey buttoned top leaned against the wall.
Calm and collected until she got to work. Why the change in demeanor? What happened there that kept her spooked?

“I have. Information is a currency, after all, isn’t it? I always figured someone, someday, would want to know what I know. That maybe if his regime ends and the Guards are removed from Malvania in my lifetime, I could help rebuild the collection of history books lost to this era. Contribute. I’ve nothing else to offer in this fight but information,” Janey explained.
“Your knowledge wields much power, Miss. You best guard that with your life. There will come a time and place where it will be needed and it won’t be after he’s gone,” Billy said.
Janey tilted her head at him. “And you, I trust, know who I can take it to?”
“That is going to depend on your intentions with using it for a currency. What do you seek in exchange?”
“Action against my father. To end this. I do not intend to simply go into hiding, Captain. I might be out for now, but I am not free until my country is. I still have an obligation to my people.”
Billy set the bottle down. He clasped his hands together and gazed at her for a few moments. Contemplative. His head tilted slightly.
“You intend to fight your father?” he asked.

“Or else what? You’re going to kill me?” Emily snapped. “You’re only the second person to threaten that today, Inger. I’m surrounded by men much scarier than you all the time. You might be rogue, but you’re a coward.”
He shoved the gun into her stomach.
“Don’t make this harder than it needs to be. This is your last warning. Back. Off. You want these?” he said, shaking the bag. “You need to back off. You get the diamonds, and maybe I tell Dean it’s time to pull you out of this.”

“I am afraid I am far too busy for that.” The man’s voice was calm and even, unconcerned. “I have people to speak to and errands to run.”
“You can speak to whomever you share a cell with, and no one else.”
“I will have to decline your offer. If you value your life, you will not meddle in my affairs.”
The interloper had been slowly closing the distance as they spoke, and now Er’end realized with a start that he was within arms reach. Raising his sword, he directed the point towards the man.
“You will stop where you are! Freeze!”
“Poor choice of words,” the stranger purred, placing a hand on the guard’s shoulder.

I wish I had words for the long week this has been. Hubby and I went to a friend's lovely, joyful wedding. Lots of grief came up for me. Vehicle broke down on the way there and home. Expensive. Stressful. My seasonal depression is kicking in early. Will have a longer post about it soon. I'm tired.
