Updated to Oct. 7, when Christa’s attorneys gave an update about her. Christa is awake and speaking following the botched execution attempt on Sept. 30, 2026. It is still unknown what is to come, legally, since she is the first prisoner to survive both lethal injections. #truecrime

An excerpt from a free Substack serial book called "Beyond Cover" by Lavinia Thompson.

Andros, in a long-sleeved, dark blue button-up shirt, tweed vest, and gray trousers looked completely out of place. Dwayne felt the same in his dark jeans and black leather jacket. They were both old, exhausted men in a place meant for the partying feral. Disco balls hanging from the ceiling reflected lights off the empty dance floor. Chairs had been set on the tables. Glasses and bottles twinkled along a mirrored wall behind the bar. Pool tables at one end of the room. Dark violet walls. Matching velvet seats with small, circular black tables. Under normal lights, it looked much different in comparison to when it was open, crammed with sweating, drunk, and dancing bodies beneath purple lights and darkness.
Thankfully, he’d never been in the building for such chaos. His partying days were about 30 years behind him. He sure didn’t miss it.

She survived the two lethal injections administered by prison staff, the first prisoner to ever do so. Her lawyers are cautiously optimistic. Her legal future is so far unknown. For now, executions in Tennessee have been halted. What happens now is hard to say. I updated the story about this.

This was it. She would infiltrate the mysteriously obscure Ruby Spiders. The first law enforcement officer to do so. From a nameless orphan in the crowd to a name in the undercover history books.
She would finally be somebody. Not only the girl without parents. The woman who never knew who she was. Unsure of her footing and place in the world. No longer simply a whimsy flower-obsessed girl who related more to nature than she did people.
No, she would no longer be forgettable. The fragments of her career might come to mean something. Might come together in the way petals did at sunset after laying open to the sky all day.
And she would do it with the surreptitious stealth of night. The same resilience and calm composure of Kira’s reticent character.

Ironically, she'd already asked for alternative means of execution, including hanging. It would have been a lot more merciful than this. Look, I know her crime 1995 was awful. Colleen Slemmer suffered to her death, too. But the death penalty doesn't fix that, imo. #truecrime #ChristaPike

Dwayne nodded. Speak of the devil, he thought, mildly relieved it was only a biker shootout. They wouldn’t recognize him here.
The bullets weren’t meant for him.
As the cracks and roars and screeches died down, Dwayne motioned for Oliver to stay put while he crept up to the window, which remained intact. He waited a few more moments before peeking out the edge of the curtain. The sun hadn’t yet set, the overcast skies still lit up faintly. Leather-covered bodies lay bleeding on the sidewalk, some at the edge of parking lot. His eyes narrowed at the men in suits who approached the scene. He recognized Fedar Brusilov and Borya Radimir, followed by a group of other Russian mobsters, armed with machine guns and shotguns. Dread filled Dwayne’s chest. He gripped his gun handle until his knuckles turned white.
