This graph shows two things, 1) obviously that the cameras reduced speeding, but 2) that the improvement kept getting better over time. Speeders tend to get one or two tickets and then learn and change their behaviour. This isn't a cash grab, it's an extremely useful intervention.

Dating from around 1865, this hooded parka from the Aleutian Islands in southern Alaska is made from seal intestines, a naturally waterproof & windproof material. Both robust & decorative, these seal gut parkas would have been used daily to keep warm & dry in this harsh environment. bit.ly/4oRZuCC
A hooded garment with long sleeves, made of strips of material stitched in horizontal rows with decorative embroidery around the hem and cuffs.

American civil society is full of abject cowards, that is the issue. The government is a mafia state but it is winning because most American elite institutions are devoid of anything resembling integrity and are folding rather than stand on principles that were little more than marketing.

Firefighters rest after fighting a subway tunnel fire at West 55th Street and Broadway, 1915
bw photo of a couple wiped-out men sitting on the curb. A couple guys near them look like senior fire department officers -- they're in clean uniforms, because they haven't had to fight a fire underground. No breathing apparatus, not much protective gear -- it must have been hell.

Cul de Sac, and Adjacent Places - Richard Thompson, ~2010
a watercolor ‘map’ of the fictional DC suburb Cul de Sac, setting of the perfect comic strip of that name. A mostly faceless subdivision rises into a cloud-capped peak, while around its base flows a moat and rivers of cars and traffic. In the distance can be seen “the Unknown City,” “Geek’s Neck,” and “France or Japan.”

Nine years ago, some people in my family moved into a house with a microwave that had a busted control screen. The only button that works is the "add 30 seconds." It turns out that's the only button they need. Heat up a cup of tea? Two presses. Cinnamon roll? One press. Corn on the cob? Four.

there is no technological or material obstacle that prevents us from building streets like this in the united states, only the rules we've stupidly imposed on ourselves to favor the needs of cars over the needs of human beings.

“Second-hand books are wild books, homeless books; they have come together in vast flocks of variegated feather, and have a charm which the domesticated volumes of the library lack. A total ban is the only sane policy for Airbnb. There obviously needs to be accommodation in cities for visitors, but that shouldn’t be at the expense of housing units for people who actually live there. More governments should follow Barcelona’s lead.
