🧵 Ottoman Eid Purses, Istanbul Work, 1850s
These are exquisite examples of mid-19th-century Ottoman craftsmanship, specifically designed for the tradition of gifting during Eid (Bayram). In Istanbul during the 1850s, such purses were often used to present gold coins or sweets to children, family members, or the less fortunate.

Visual Analysis & Craftsmanship: The image showcases four rectangular purses (likely velvet or heavy silk) featuring a technique known as Dival embroidery (or Sırma), which was highly popular in the Ottoman court and urban elite circles.

Material: The base fabrics are rich velvets in deep burgundy, plum, and charcoal tones, providing a luxurious contrast to the metallic threads.

Embroidery Style: The designs use gold and silver couched threads. In this technique, the metallic threads are laid on the surface and stitched down with fine silk thread, creating a raised, three-dimensional effect.

Motifs: The patterns are quintessentially Ottoman, featuring:

Stylized Florals: Clove-like shapes and palmettes.

Arabesque Curves: Symmetrical scrolls that reflect the Rococo and Baroque influences that were merging with traditional Ottoman aesthetics during the Tanzimat era (1839–1876).

Note: These weren't just functional items; they were symbols of the giver’s status and generosity. Once the gift inside was used, the purse itself became a cherished keepsake.
