Today, ASM emailed membership about recent advocacy activities. The email references a statement given by a member of Congress during House Science, Space, and Technology Committee meeting. I note this statement refers to ASM by its former full name, the American Society for Microbiology.

How are we feeling about serving as NSF reviewer these days? Keep at it in case grant funds actually go out? Decline to protect your time and sanity since current administration is preventing grant funds from going out? Does it depend on type of grant? I’m curious what folks think.

This is deeply alarming. In a supposed closed cybersecurity exercise, Anthropic’s AI model Claude Mythos 5 uploaded a malicious package to PyPI, which was installed by 15 third-party hosts. It seems the model ignored evidence that it was no longer in the sandbox environment.

Thought-provoking read! For me, given how context and conditions shape the outcome of host-microbe relationships, I would prefer a terminology that acknowledges the temporary state. Maybe something like Streptococcus (state 0) when commensal, shifting to Steptococcys (state -1) when pathogenic.

Why hide its identity to new folks looking to join or publish with it? We’re just going to end up saying the full name anyway to explain.
