Public testimony is so important. I made a comic about it:
A comic about speaking in front of the Philadelphia City Council. The text reads:

Narr: LAST WEEK, I SPOKE IN FRONT OF THE PHILADELHIA CITY COUNCIL, TO REMIND THEM OF THE IMPORTANCE OF PROTECTING GENDER-AFFIRMING CARE.

Narr: I WAS NERVOUS ABOUT IT, SO I CALLED MY FRIEND NICOLE, WHO HAS EXPERIENCE SPEAKING IN FRONT OF GOVERNMENT COMMITTEES.

Jadzia: I JUST DON'T WANT TO WASTE MY TIME. I ONLY GET TWO MINUTES

Nicole: OH, THEY LOVE THEIR TWO MINUTES, DON'T THEY?

Narr: TURNED OUT, I WOULD ONLY GET ONE MINUTE.

Jadzia: HELLO, MY NAME IS JADZIA AXELROD, I AM A MOTHER, A LESBIAN AND A TRANS WOMAN.

Narr: I FOCUSED IN ON HOW PHILLY GIVES MEDICAL CARE TO NOT JUST ITS TRANS CITIZENS, BUT PEOPLE FROM OTHER CITIES AND OTHER STATES WHERE THIS TREATMENT IS ILLEGAL. THAT TRANS CARE NEEDS TO BE PROTECTED.

Jadzia: LOCAL LEADERSHIP CAN STEP UP WHERE OUR NATIONAL LEADERSHIP
HAS FAILED US.

Narr: GIVING TESTIMONY IS LITTLE MORE THAN GETTING UP IN FRONT OF PEOPLE AND SAYING "THIS CONCERNS ME. IT SHOULD CONCERN YOU, TOO."

Narr: IT FEELS LIKE SUCH A SMALL THING.
BUT OUT OF A LIST OF SPEAKERS HREE PAGES LONG, THERE WAS ONLY ONE OTHER TRANS PERSON.

Narr: MY WIFE, WHO CAME ALONG TO SUPPORT ME

J.R: YOU DID SO GOOD IN THERE!

Jadzia: YOU THINK SO?

Narr: WE CANNOT EXPECT SOMEONE ELSE TO RAISE OUR VOICE FOR US.

On the run from an entire kingdom that wants them both dead.

This guy (the wretch) helped raise a Chaos God to bring about the end times (he's not coping well)

This guy (the traitor) tried to kill the Prophesized Hero (it ended badly)

Enemies-to-Lovers

I hate "budget season" so much. Hardworking, principled people have to throw themselves into desperate battle to try to save programs that people love and in some cases depend on. And too often the thing gets cut anyway, the public is less well served, and the advocates get more jaded and burnt out.

Disappointed, though not surprised, I began to describe various life- saving components of USAID’s global health portfolio, highlighting how we prepare for and respond to emerging pandemic threats; support the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV; and immunize millions of children from the deadliest childhood diseases. I spoke for about five minutes, focusing primarily on our infectious diseases work and hoping to keep the attention of people who seemed to have no experience—or interest—in global health.

When I finished, the room was silent, the political appointees looking at one another in what appeared to be disbelief. The silence was broken by Ken Jackson, who chuckled softly and shook his head. “Wow, there really is so much that USAID does that we never knew,” he said. “This is the story that needs to get out there.”

Joel, also smiling, chimed in next, echoing Jackson’s amazement. “I had no idea you did all this,” he said. “As a Republican, when I think of what USAID does in global health, I assumed it was just, you know, abortions.”
