On the one hand, this referendum is very stupid. On the other hand, it's the first election where I don't have to ask my husband who he voted for and have the convo go like this:

Jesse Brown, whose behaviour has been getting increasingly bizarre of late, says he has “fired” himself as host of Canadaland in order to focus on the quote-unquote “Palestine issue” full-time (for Canadaland, so he’s not actually “fired”) To answer your next question, yes this is real
CANADALAND

Jesse Brown is fired!

Time to figure out how to book a vaccine appointment in Alberta. Am I eligible? Do I have to pay? Did I preorder? Let's find out! I also have to renew my kids' passports and I have a feeling that will be easier

Casually throwing away a decade of work, probably 10s of millions of dollars worth, and making Edmonton start from scratch. Stopping a building boom in its tracks too. Red tape reduction my ass.
Edmonton will be required to adopt rules for high-density infill development that revert to the parameters in place before its 2024 zoning changes for housing types, density and height, and to restore minimum on-site parking requirements in place before 2020. Edmonton will have three months from Oct. 8 to amend its bylaw.

Love that Edmontonians can elect councillors who support bike lanes and infill, only for the province to override them. We’re holding a separation referendum because the Premier won’t let anyone “silence the voices of hundreds of thousands of Albertans.” Unless they live in Edmonton, apparently.

one of the absolute heroes of my childhood! just seeing this photograph in one of those Time-Life coffee table books stayed with me for a lifetime I hope that her long life was filled with joy and adventure
a 1969 NASA publicity photo of computer scientist Margaret Hamilton standing beside a stack of binders taller than she is, which contain code she wrote as chief software developer for the Apollo 11 mission

Ms. Hamilton is a white woman, 33 years old at the time, with dark blonde hair just past her shoulders; she is wearing a striped minidress and round-framed glasses

her expression is excited and amused

Just reflecting on the reality that the most consistent and invasive messaging Albertans are getting from our provincial government is about separating from Canada and joining gambling apps.

wait these "hot for hockey" "stories" are 60 second audio clips? LOL my god. WHAT are we doing here. I'm insulted as a lapsed hockey fan AND as a reader.
According to the Sports Business Journal, “Led by new CMO Sean Eggert, the NHL is rolling out a series of short stories on audiobook platforms throughout the season that present real-life NHL storylines in the style of romance novels. The league has contracted popular hockey romance authors to write and narrate the 60-to-90-second pieces, which will direct listeners to tune in to upcoming games to see how the stories play out on the ice. It will also tap influential “BookTok” creators to spread the word.”

NHL doesn't give a fuck about the fans OR the players. In case the Bowman and Babcock appointents in Edmonton didn't make the player part clear!

Laura Frey @lauratfrey.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
The NHL doing a "hot for hockey" booktok campaign in the wake of the pushback on Forementon's signing is unbelievable enough... also... when booktok first went crazy over hockey c. 2023, didn't a player's wife have to make a public statement asking creators to stop harassing her husband

Yes!! Someone asked me at work if I was excited for the oilers season start and I said no, I'm taking a break from hockey. The two men I was speaking to looked at me with wonder and asked "why??" Feels like after a day or two of performative outrage everyone's just gone back to normal😮‍💨

We need to continue to keep the heat on the Oilers over this. Anyone who continues to argue that the "alleged" perpetrators deserve second chances while the victims and survivors get nothing is not someone you can trust or rely on.

I read the "Standing up for a stronger Alberta" "Your Guide to the 2026 referendum" pamphlet so you don't have to Notably this guide has zero information on when or where or how to vote LOL
021
Laura Frey @lauratfrey.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I wonder if she means an actual majority, or a 49% "majority" which led to us not having a time change anymore
If the option to begin the process to hold a binding provincial referendum receives support from the majority of albertans, the government would start the legal process necessary to hold a binding referendum on separation at a later date

Laura Frey @lauratfrey.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Well I get why the seppies are so pissed at Danielle, every other question had biased framing, inflammatory headlines, large red text and misleading charts... this one is quite mild by comparison!!
I'm not putting the whole text here. The question is should Alberta remain a province of canada, or should the government of Alberta commenced the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada
100
Laura Frey @lauratfrey.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I'm not bothering with the individual constitutional questions they are so stupid and pointless let's just go to the grand finale
100
Laura Frey @lauratfrey.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Oops forgot alt text, introductory page to the Constitutional questions says "Albertans voting yes to the referendum questions on the following page will not change the Constitution but will give the government of Alberta a clear mandate to build support among other provinces to do so"

Laura Frey @lauratfrey.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Well at least they're admitting this entire section is pointless

We've already changed the way elections work based on one conspiracy theory (no more vote counting machines) so let's give in to another voting conspiracy theory!!!
Ballot question 5: do you support the government introducing a law requiring individuals to provide proof of citizenship, such as a passport, birth certificate, or citizenship card, to vote in an Alberta provincial election
100
Laura Frey @lauratfrey.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That's a bold assumption given how hell-bent this government is on privatizing Healthcare
Ballot question 4: assuming that all Canadian citizens and permanent residents continue to qualify for public health care and education as they do now ...
100
Laura Frey @lauratfrey.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The concept of anyone moving to Alberta for "our world-class social programs". Ask anyone on AISH about that
This question asked whether temporary residents should wait for at least a year to qualify for social programs like Child Care subsidies, student aid and other benefits and income supports. Having this kind of waiting. Will ensure that temporary residents moving to Alberta are doing so primarily for economic purposes rather than for our world class social programs

Laura Frey @lauratfrey.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
If you need one reason to dismiss this entire Alberta referendum as disgusting and racist here it is. These immigrants, who are supposedly taking all our jobs, and therefore paying taxes, shouldn't have access to "taxpayer-funded services" like healthcare and education. Got it
Do you support the government of Alberta introducing a law mandating that only Canadian citizens, permanent residence at individuals with an Alberta approved immigration status will be eligible for provincial funded programs, such as healthcare, education and other social services. 🤮

Laura Frey @lauratfrey.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Why are Francophones catching strays
Supposedly "Ottawa has greatly expanded temporary immigration through other streams such as International students, Refugee claimants and those who are fluent in French." AND THAT'S BAD GUYS
110
Laura Frey @lauratfrey.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Shameful. Literally Randy from South Park saying "they took our jobs." Back in the pile!!
A pamphlet mailed to me from the Alberta government, in other words create it and produced with my tax dollars, says that it (it being immigration,) "has also adversely affected albertans and Canadians looking for affordable housing and employment opportunities"
