🚨 RSA 2026 CFP 🚨 Join Andrea Rizzi, Nick Terpstra, and yours truly for a series of panels on trust in the early modern world sponsored by the Toronto Renaissance and Reformation Colloquium. Trust us—pun intended—you won’t want to miss this call! More info below & in alt-text.
Call for Papers: The Fabric of Trust [Renaissance Society of America, San Francisco, 19-21
February 2026]
The Toronto Renaissance and Reformation Colloquium (TRRC) will sponsor up to 3 panels at the
next Annual Meeting of the Renaissance Society of America in San Francisco, February 19–21,
2026.
We welcome proposals on the theme of The Fabric of Trust: how trust was encouraged,
experienced, and contested in the early modern world (c. 1400–1700). We are particularly
interested in contributions that examine the material, sensory, and gendered dimensions of
trust, and the ways in which it was embedded in visual, textual, ritual, legal, and performative
practices.
Topics may include (but are not limited to):
• The visual and material culture of trust (e.g. relics, portraits, textiles, documents)
• Gendered expressions and expectations of trust in domestic, civic, or religious contexts
• Embodied and sensory experiences of credibility, authority, and faith
• Technologies of trust: surveillance, mapping, accounting, and record-keeping
• Cross-cultural, mercantile, and diplomatic encounters
• Performative strategies in theatre, ritual, or legal speech
Proposals from all disciplines will be considered, and themes/topics that lend themselves
to interdisciplinary treatment and digital humanities methods and are strongly preferred.
TO APPLY:
Please submit a proposal as a single WORD document to Andrea Rizzi arizzi@unimelb.edu.au
by Friday, 1 August 2025. Your proposal should include the paper's title and abstract (150-
word max.), a CV, your current affiliation, email address, and (if applicable) completion date of
PhD.
Please note that the RSA requires that those presenting papers at its conference must be
members of the RSA. Those who do not take out membership before the conference begins
are removed from the program.

Today's #UnrulyRenaissance tidbit: In the late fifteenth century, Isabella d'Este employed a buffoon at her court that went by the stage name "Frittella" (Pancake). His real name was Giovan Francesco dei Corioni.

Not one of these EOs listed in this letter is valid. Notably, no statutory language is listed. The President’s agenda is not a statutory reason for termination. It really is just straight up lying and people should start just suing the government in the Court of Claims.

Hello, new followers! Reposting this recent announcement for those who missed it: New era for the HLQ. Please share widely! If you study the #earlymodern period (c. 1400-1800) in any discipline, we'd love to see what you're working on. www.pennpress.org/journals/jou...
A flyer advertising a call for submissions for the Huntington Library Quarterly. The Text reads: The Huntington Library Quarterly (HLQ) is a peer-reviewed journal featuring original research and new perspectives on the early modern period, broadly defined (c. 1400–1800). Its content reflects an early modern world that was connected and cosmopolitan, with diverse communities and cultures increasingly linked by the circulation of people, ideas, social practices, and material objects in ways that transcend disciplinary and geographic boundaries. We invite submissions that draw on the sources, methods, and theoretical frameworks of literature, art, history, science, medicine, material culture, music, performance, and critical cultural studies, with a preference for scholarship that is broadly legible across disciplines.

HLQ’s historical focus on Britain and its American colonies has been dramatically expanded to embrace broader and more diverse fields of inquiry, including scholarship rooted in continental Europe, the African Diaspora, and the Indigenous Americas, as well as their intersections with Mediterranean, Pacific, and Indian Ocean worlds.

The Huntington Library Quarterly (HLQ) invites article submissions for two featured issues that will mark the journal’s new direction. Submissions received before 15 January 2025 will be evaluated for the first of these issues, to be published in September 2025. Submissions received before 15 March 2025 will be evaluated for the second of these issues, to be published in December 2025.
