This tomb, the earliest commissioned by the Pazzi family at Santa Croce in Florence, has been a complicated one! Check out the current thinking at: sepoltuario.iath.virginia.edu/memorials/10...

Working on a manuscript in the Biblioteca Moreniana that includes drawings of lost tombs. A marble font was in the Oratory of S. Maria delle Grazie, torn down in 1874. I came across this amazing photo of Florentines crossing the destroyed bridge in 1944. Let's hope we don't repeat this on #BridgeDay
A view of the greenish-brown Arno river in Florence from the north bank of the destroyed bridge known in the Middle Ages as the Ponte Rubaconte and later as the Ponte alle Grazie thanks to an oratory of the same name that stood on the bridge. Floretines climb over the rubble to get from the south side of the river to the north side.

We love how this patron made sure his gravesite would be remembered as long as the church stands. Not on the tomb slab (removed at some time in the 18th or 19th century, or maybe 1966), not even on the marker with his arms. Nope. Right there on the wall sepoltuario.iath.virginia.edu/memorials/13...

Is it just us, or does Lorenzo Bartolini look a little like Ted Cruz? He was the last academy member to be buried in their chapel at Santissima Annunziata on January 20th, 1850. #history #Florence sepoltuario.iath.virginia.edu/individuals/...
Portrait of the sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini by Ingres. Now in the Musée du Louvre, inv. RF 1942 24. https://collections.louvre.fr/en/ark:/53355/cl010066397
He is dressed as a gentleman in a black long coat, black vest, and trousers. His white shirt is visible at the color and a little under his black cravat. He proudly puts his left hand on his hip, as he stands in three-quarter view in front of a table where he has placed his right hand in an authoritative gesture with thumb and forefinger spread wide, the knuckle of his finger bent to lie on the table. The table holds a portrait bust, books, and instruments suggesting Bartolini's learning and artistic skill.

Oof! 17 days since the last post. Still going down #research rabbit holes, but the last few days have been focusing on the altarpiece and altar that once contained this beautiful thing! Lorenzo Monaco, The Prophet Isaiah, sold at Christie's Old Masters 1 May 2019. #ArtHistory #humanities
Roundel from the pinnacle of an altarpiece by Lorenzo Monaco showing the Prophet Isaiah against a gold background. His halo is punched and incised into the gold leave. He wears a blue head and shoulder covering over a red robe. He points with his right index finger to a scroll that reads ECCE VIGO COCIP, the abbreviated Latin text of his statement in Is. 7:14 "Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son.” Isaiah is shown as an old man with grey hair and beard and he has a serious expression with pinched eyebrows, furrowed brow, and downturned month. Formidable!
