She was amazed at what one man could accomplish in such a tiny kitchen, the salad with a dressing which was as fragrant as it was delicious. Chicken was crispy, sweet, and spicy. Nothing was less than perfect. The wine was chosen carefully, and the cake was delightful.

As soon as Bert hopped off Yellow, he pulled on some of his armor. He didn't know what to expect, but taking an arrow in the back wasn't part of his plan. Yellow sniffed the air several times, and then rested his head on the ground, which seemed a good sign to Bert. "Want me to look around a bit first?" Bert asked Cat.
She smiled at him, put on a few pieces of leather armor herself, and showed him her long dagger. "I haven't spent all that time practicing with Mira to wait back here. Besides, it never ends well when people split up in the stories."
Bert nodded. She was right. "Stay behind me at least, just in case," he said.
"My hero," she replied, but stood on her toes and kissed his cheek to take the sting off. "There was nothing like this on the map. It looks old. I didn't notice any buildings anywhere around and here, and there are no roads or paths that I could spot from the sky. Very strange."
Leave it to Cat to notice things he never would have considered. "It looks like an old castle."
"Not quite, I think," she replied. "Something else, I think. Perhaps for trade? I'm sure you saw it's right on the line."
Bert nodded. "Let's check the big building. It seems to be the most in tact."
"It should be," a voice said beside them.
Bert drew his sword and spun to the sound.
"Easy, lad!" an elderly man said. "You're in my home, after all!"

Text reading: From the moment my feet hit the cobblestones, I feel it. I'm someplace special.
The air is hazy and rich with barbecue smoke and neon light. Crowds of people mingle and swirl together happily in the colors and soft shadows. Blues music beautiful enough to break hearts drifts out the doors of half the establishments, while the rest radiate jazz, joy, and rock-and-roll. It all crashes into me like a great wave.
I want to laugh until my jaws hurt. I want to fall to my knees and weep. I want to sing loud enough for God to hear me over the noise of the world.
Instead, I turn to my friends.
"Shall we?"
We surrender ourselves to that river of people and music and light. What a beautiful night.
God, what a beautiful night.

Luxury sedans next to beat-up coupes next to the gargantuan pickups of the modern day.
He takes us around an enormous old wood-paneled Winnebago, and we arrive at the car. Uncle Rico presents it with a proud grin. "Here she is, gentlemen."
There it is, indeed - a Pontiac Trans Am, sapphire blue. "I've always wanted a muscle car," I say, a little louder than intended.
Uncle Rico's grin gets even wider. "Would you like a test drive?"
I grin back at him. "You bet I would. Kent?"
"Might as well."

Twelve more graves need to be dug this week. Between that and maintenance I’m at my wits end. I wish I could hire at least one hand to help me with this. Usually I can handle the work load. Normally people don’t die this fast but this damn flu. It’s a ravager, I can’t keep up. My hands are shaking even now with fatigue from shoveling. I’m going to petition for two more hands at least for the weekend to keep up with this.
I figured that after the war ended and the killing had stopped I would have had some down time. At this rate the whole damn place will be full before too long.

Everyone looked blank. Everyone but Dorothy who looked up startled.
“That pretty much guarantees it will be leaked on social media,” said Melissa.
“What is it, Dorothy?” asked Scott.
“Dái xióng,” said Dorothy. “It means wombat in Chinese. It's a code name.”
“My dear old Dad,” said Melissa. Now everybody looked startled.
“And forty years ago,” said Dorothy. “My handler.”

Adana shook her head. Benac was one of her most level headed advisors. If he was getting this worked up, she knew he wasn't telling her the half of it. "So they won't integrate."
"I can't say for sure all won't, there are a lot of them, but not a single one I saw or spoke to the entire time I was there, no.
They'd sooner keel over dead."
She drew in a deep breath and took her time letting it back out again. "And where would we put this city, pray tell?" She wasn't fully convinced, but was headed in that direction.
Benac went over to his desk and returned with a map. "Here." He said, spreading it out and jabbing his finger into a spot on the southern coast of the Dagger Sea. "We've got enough port towns up the northern coast, and it's not that far from where they all arrived so getting them there on foot won't be too difficult. The plains are empty for a reason, there's nothing out there worth having, but the land's good enough for farming with a bit of effort. We can even magically seed the place and just not tell the bastards. Once the city is mostly built and they can feed themselves, let them. If they learn to play nice over time, fine. But until then, keep them out of sight and out of mind in the backwaters.
Adana looked at the map, back to Benac, and let out another sigh. "I'll see what I can do."

The Interview
Parker took a good look at the man who was conducting his interview. Frank Williams was in his early fifties, thin, very fit, hair gone entirely grey, or at least what was left of it. His eyes told the true story of the man though. They shone with intelligence. He had a light demeanour and Parker had found the early stages of the interview — looking over his resume and references — actually enjoyable rather than stressful. Frank had spent most of his professional life at NASA right out of college, something Parker hoped to replicate. A lot of people entering the space and science fields worked for private companies since the money was much better. NASA still struggled to get funding, and many politicians pointed to the private companies and their success as a reason to avoid funding NASA at all. Parker found that very short-sighted and had mentioned it when Frank had asked why Parker was choosing NASA. Why wouldn't you want your public institutions watching over a new frontier? Especially something as important as space. It seemed absurd to Parker not to fund it more than ever before some greedy trillionaire ruined something for everyone. History repeating itself and all that.
"Okay Mr. Varia, Parker, the last part is the psych test," Frank Williams told him. "People get all worried about this, but honestly, it's a relic of a bygone age when we looked over people for the potential to travel to space. The fact you've, you know, already done that, sort of makes the whole thing obsolete, but rules are rules," he gave a wry smile. "Welcome to government, I guess!"

“About this spider model you drew here Parker, I just can’t see it being large enough to get around, haul water and food. It’s too… spindly,” Kate suggested looking at a rough sketch Parker had created.
“It’s too small,” DJ added with his usual level of tact.
“Classic Parker!” Ibrahim added, grabbing Parker by the shoulder in a playful manner. “Naw, I’m just kidding. Actually. Parker, you’re looking…and feeling pretty buff my man!”
Parker smiled. He was feeling pretty good. In his final year of high school, the years in the gym were paying off. He’d closed much of the gap between him and his older peers. A growth spurt had helped as well, but he didn’t think of himself as being the younger, smaller kid on campus anymore. It helped that the first year students seemed to be getting smaller every year. “Alright comedians, let’s stay on task here,” he added jovially. “I still think the spider-bot is the play for climbing trees and balancing on branches while it harvests food. I can’t think of a better design for that task. Nature selected it, after all. We’re probably not going to beat millions of years of work.”
“Sure, but what does it do with that food once it removes it from the tree?” Ibrahim asked. “And how does it carry water or carry all the instruments to test soil and all that?”
“Multiple robots,” DJ said out of nowhere.
“Of course!” Kate added, offering a high five towards DJ, which he either didn’t see or completely ignored. She pulled her hand back awkwardly. “We can have a larger robot to serve as the base of operations and the spider-bot can come out of it for more delicate work. It can get tools, bring back food, whatever it needs.”
“That’s perfect,” Ibrahim said, building on the idea. “We can set it up like a roving carrier. There’s no reason we have to limit it to a spider-bot either. Different crops can have different bots. Or different jobs. Need to plough the ground to plant seeds? There’s a bot for that. Need to pick grapes very delicately? T…

“Who? And when?”
“I dunno, these two were here before sunup. But they’re direct from Bronzebreak from the looks of the saddles – definitely not hired from the lowland stables.”
Tiri whistled appreciatively. “They might be the biggest I’ve ever seen!” She flashed another fond smile to the mother and its cubs, cooing gently at her, promising that none could be as agile or as cute as she was.
“They’re not pets, Londe,” Matthias grumbled.
“Oh, don’t listen to him,” she continued, waving at the cubs as they began to wrestle until their meals made them too sleepy to play. She surrendered to the tug Matthias gave her arm and his insistence that they ascend to Sierra Eva, but when she twisted to follow him, he had become as rigid as the posts supporting the stable canopy overhead. He pushed two fingers into her ribs, making her straighten with a yelp just as a pair of Crown Ambassadors stepped off the stairs and turned to face them.
