The house is, to put it mildly, fucked. Now that I’m looking at the walls and ceiling I’m a little alarmed at the thought that we’d spent the whole night underneath here. This place needs a sledgehammer. Or maybe another fire. The only thing that might be salvageable is the stacked stone chimney, which is also not in great condition. I can probably re-point it, replace some of the burnt up mortar with fresh stuff, but there’s a metal sleeve in there that’ll need to be replaced, and there’s no universe where I can get to it. Not with these shoulders. Maybe Kellan can get to it.

Penny looked him over, appraising. "Can I come over there? Sit in your lap?"

He scoffed at her. "Why?"

She shrugged, spreading her hands. "You look like you need a hug." She eyed him to see how that landed, saw that it really didn't. "Uh. I need a hug?"

That didn't fly either. He stared at her in stony silence. She huffed out an exasperated breath. "Because I need to get inside your guard far enough that if you decide you really hate the things I need to say to you, I have enough time to use this." She pulled a hypodermic needle from her pocket.

Thomas stared at her, then at the needle, then back at her. Then he burst into hysterical laughter. "Fucking… What? Jesus Christ Penny! What even is that?"

"Haloperidol." She didn't even look a touch ashamed.

I pull a map from my inventory and toss it to him. It’s a pretty good map of the Heronstep Bay region, from the swampy areas down south of Descant to the broad rivers of Sylvania that drain into the bay. I put my finger on a point quite close to the Sylvania border, almost equidistant from the elvish capitol of yFell and the human city of Ebmorrea.
“It’s called Lane,” I say. “Not named for the type of road, but for a guy, Torvold Lane, who founded the place. It’s a pretty small community, maybe a couple thousand people, and most of them are farmers or people who support farmers like feed stores and fencepost sellers and blacksmiths and stuff.”

I keep my focus on the helmet. I don’t recognize it. It’s not a part of Paula’s usual gear. It’s huge and ornate with big silvery wings arcing down from the pointy top to shield your cheeks and neck in a way that would absolutely obliterate any peripheral vision. I examine it, pushing my intent forwards until there’s a familiar springy feeling behind my eyes and the Dungeon Controller floods me with information, both in the form of a little box full of text and in direct to my brain speech.

Penny, senior enough to have an arcane crusader but not accustomed yet to its use, highly ranked but young, was to hang back from the scrum. She was to watch for openings, give assistance where it was needed. They said that she would be their wild card, their ace in the hole. It was an important role, they said, allowing for optimum flexibility.
She was surplus to requirements and they wanted her out of the way.
