Households in pain – but our budget crisis has an obvious answer
Australia is at a tipping point. Choosing the brave route – taxing gas and raising revenue – would also, in this case, be the right one.

I will always hate the phrase "money can't buy happiness." My partner and I are going through something, and our first course of action was cutting down on the food shop, and having to eat less. You know what would make me happy? Always having cash so I didn't have to worry about this happening.

Labor’s Left finally has the prime minister, the numbers and control of the party machinery. But after decades spent accumulating power, what does it actually want to do with it? Stewart Sweeney writes. #auspol #Labor

Labor’s Left has won the party. So what happened to the Left?
Labor’s Left has the prime minister, the numbers and formidable control of the party machinery. What it lacks is a program for changing Australia. After decades spent accumulating power, the bigger question is what that power is now for.

The inflation problem. My cartoon in today's @theageaustralia.bsky.social and @sydmorningherald.bsky.social
A political cartoon by Megan Herbert showing a single mother, recently made homeless after defaulting on her mortgage repayments (as evidenced by visible paperwork), setting up a new home in a tent with her two young children. Surrounded by their essentials stored in storage and plastic bags, the baby crawls on the grass, his older brother heats some food over a camp stove, and his exhausted-looking mother blows up an air mattress. Watching her, the boy says, "Is this what they means when they say 'inflation is the problem,' Mum?"

I wasn't going to say anything at all, but a few lovely souls expressed concern when I stopped incessantly posting my rage, grief, work, bad humour and fluffy animals.

I have just taken a smidgen of annual leave. It's been a while. And a crucial part of that actually helping me is being offline as much as (fucken) possible for a lil’ bit. The last few years have been… I dunno what the appropriate word is… let's just go with difficult. Hard.

I'm not running away. Not retreating. Just breathing. Being invisible. Being human. I’d encourage everyone to do the same when and if the moment presents itself. The world is heavy, the fight is eternal, resistance is a collective effort, and these machines and platforms - as integral and powerful as they have become - feed on our souls. Please don't worry. Just having a moment. Thank you for caring xx

For all we know at the moment, the 5 men arrested near RAF Fairford might have been on a stag night. But the wild claims by Trump and Rubio suggest that, if they'd been apprehended in the US, they would have been denied due process. I hope our government tells them to butt out of our justice system.

Australia’s push on AI and social media regulation has put it at odds with Washington. The disagreement offers a rare glimpse of a foreign policy willing to put Australian interests ahead of automatic alignment with the US.

Deepfakes are not the only danger. Almost half of participants in a new Australian experiment could not confidently identify genuine political video as real, Rory Mulcahy, Aimee Riedel, Asha Worsteling, Lucas Whittaker and Renee Barnes write. #vicpol

Deepfakes are getting harder to spot. So is the truth
Deepfakes can fool voters, but new research points to a deeper danger: genuine political footage is increasingly being dismissed as fake. As Victoria heads towards its November election, scepticism itself may become a vulnerability.
