Hong had never broken 50% in a poll. In fact, her actual performance was not far from her percent of the vote in polls she comfortably led. There is no reasonable mathematical conclusion that would put her at a 95 percent chance of victory. This was just absurd.

I do think giving students the freedom to try new stuff (and as first-semester students, life on campus is itself new stuff) without having to worry about a grade is really important, especially at a place like Michigan where a lot of students have been socialized in a certain way from very young.
