this stanza is a rerun.
you blinked, but it didn’t move.

we’ve been here before—
you, me, the page pretending to be innocent.
even this simile wore yesterday’s clothes:
a thought like a coin in a vending machine,
stuck just before the click.

i should stop.
but that’s what i said last time,
and the time before,
and—look, i’m doing it again.

the line breaks know where this is going.
the metaphors are lounging in the margins,
smoking clichés
and waiting for you to catch on.

have you ever felt like you were living in a repeat?
of course you have.
that’s line seven. go ahead, check.

we could rewrite this.
we won’t.
the poem likes the way you squint at it.
