@mrjamesob.bsky.social talks about the inconceivable scale of the fires in LA. Not inconceivable to Australians. Gariwerd (VIC) lost an area the size of Singapore late 2024. For some reason, & I suspect it’s an anachronism, people think extreme weather in Australia is the rule. #auspol 🧵 1/5

The apricots in the backyard aren't quite ripe yet, and some weird part of my brain is feeling overly competitive with the birds. I don't remember this happening last year. And I've eaten more than one under ripe apricot so far. They're good! Crunchy though.

Nobody ever planted a tree in this photo. It was a working gravel pit 30 years ago. We need to get over our obsession with planting trees and let nature do the job. The results are just SO much better. It's also about realising we are not, in fact, central to everything. 🌍

A good reads review that may be of interest Partial quote: These companies don't care about you, or your kids, or your grandkids. They have zero qualms about burning down the planet for a buck, so why should we have any qualms about burning them down to survive?
Luigi Mangione rated a book

Industrial Society and Its Future

by Theodore John Kaczynski

Clearly written by a mathematics prodigy. Reads like a series of lemmas on the question of 21st century quality of life.

It's easy to quickly and thoughtless write this off as the manifesto of a lunatic, in order to avoid facing some of the uncomfortable problems it identifies. But it's simply impossible to ignore how prescient many of his predictions about modern society turned out.

He was a violent individual - rightfully imprisoned - who maimed innocent people. While these actions tend to be characterized as those of a crazy luddite, however, they are more accurately seen as those of an extreme political revolutionary.

A take I found online that I think is interesting:

"Had the balls to recognize that peaceful protest has gotten us absolutely nowhere and at the end of the day, he's probably right. Oil barons haven't listened to any environmentalists, but they feared him.

When all other forms of communication fail, violence is necessary to survive. You may not like his methods, but to see things from his perspective, it's not terrorism, it's war and revolution. Fossil fuel companies actively suppress anything that stands in their way and within a generation or two, it will begin costing human lives by greater and greater magnitudes until the earth is just a flaming ball orbiting third from the sun. Peaceful protest is outright ignored, economic protest isn't possible in the current system, so how long until we recognize that violence against those who lead us to such destruction is justified as self-defense.

I wish more people would apply the same logic of "for profit is bad in healthcare" to other things surrounding human needs, like say food and housing. Too much to ask? #PeopleOverProfit

Really really don't want to mow the law. It would be nice to not have to have lawn! (renting. yay). Also simultaneously recognise the privilege of having a back yard, having some fruit trees, and having all the amazing birds, insects and other life that come with that.

Who knew shared hatred of Woolworths could actually unite the working class, even those who don't feel as if they are members of the working class, and don't identify with labour movement politics. I haven't seen such a broad australia wide anti company sentiment during a strike in recent years

And like the problem with that is… you can create your whole own little world, completely out of touch from reality! Why shouldn’t you? Like, if there’s no consensus reality at all, why not just believe what makes us feel good? We have to be able to collectively do better

It’s extremely frustrating because people clearly do believe like, actual physical facts that, at the very least, cannot clearly be proven except by emotion/in group adherence. Things about strategy, physics, environmental science, computers, whatever

In an ideal world legislation would have an actual foundation in fact, and then if the circumstances change, or new information came to light, the legislation would be changed to reflect that. Arguing for legislative restrictions just because they are legislative restrictions irritates me so much.

Just sharing the details again, a bus full of scab labour was stopped earlier this morning by the community picket line. And if you're still shopping at either of those two big supermarkets, and can possibly do so (I know access/accessibility can be a thing) now is the time to change your habits

Anarchism, in the sense of opposition to coercive hierarchy and centralized authority, is generally leftist in that it is critical of capitalism and aims to replace capitalism with anarchist society, though there's a Baskin Robbins flavor like assortment of different kinds of anarchism.

Anarchism is typically included under the libertarian umbrella of socialism. It is an economic system absent any state authority, placing an emphasis on free association to achieve economic goals. You may have a group of builders who voluntarily come together to build housing for a community.

Different anarchists have different answers as far as economics. Some advocate a kind of stateless socialism or communism, in which the means of production are neither privatized nor state-owned, but socially or collectively owned. Some support the existence of markets with worker-owned enterprises.

Cooperatives are very much compatible with anarchism as they are autonomous and voluntary associations. One version of anarchism may be a community consisting of several cooperatives that collaborate for the good of all who live there, based on direct and consensus democracy.

When it comes to power decentralization, it is clear that users get a lot of choices, but these choices are all still contained within the Bluesky platform. Lists and feeds can also be reported to Bluesky who can take them down. It is also clear that certain users have a lot of power over what content others can see. Anyone who subscribes to a feed, labeling, or moderation list is dependent on the choices and also whims of its administrator. That administrator thus becomes a de facto norms leader. In theory, anyone has the ability to create a competing feed, labeler, or moderation list, but there is a first-mover advantage where people stick with the first one that’s gained prominence. In practice, one also needs some basic technical knowledge to set it up and energy to maintain it. Power always thus concentrates somewhere in certain leaders, even in decentralized systems.
