Bellingcat is probably the only one I would actually sign up for, and it's likely I would be mostly absent post sign up unless there was some specific issue I was doing a deep dive on.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social talks about the inconceivable scale of the fires in LA. Not inconceivable to Australians. Gariwerd (VIC) lost an area the size of Singapore late 2024. For some reason, & I suspect it’s an anachronism, people think extreme weather in Australia is the rule. #auspol 🧵 1/5

Yesss. I do actually like sharing the apricots, but think I might bag up some bunches/clusters so the part of my brain that seems to be in hypervigilant apricot mode can relax! Usually the plums are ripe by now and act as a slight distraction, but they're not this year.

The apricots in the backyard aren't quite ripe yet, and some weird part of my brain is feeling overly competitive with the birds. I don't remember this happening last year. And I've eaten more than one under ripe apricot so far. They're good! Crunchy though.

And while we're at it, I mean is there really a problem with child labour. Shortening the womb to factory pipeline would be so much more efficient.

Uhhh apart from all the blindingly obvious problems with this scenario, sleep, and what happens during sleep, has such an huge impact on our overall health and wellbeing, and things like memory consolidation and learning. This wld intentionally be breeding traits for forced/survival labour roles

Nobody ever planted a tree in this photo. It was a working gravel pit 30 years ago. We need to get over our obsession with planting trees and let nature do the job. The results are just SO much better. It's also about realising we are not, in fact, central to everything. 🌍

I have often appreciated his content, although he can be a bit of a dick sometimes. Apparently he has some extremely problematic views around race. I'm not a regular enough listener to have picked it up. Someone mentioned it online yesterday in a discussion about fitness.

I personally don't believe that change will happens through the current democratic systems. I know other people who do. Spending time actively organising outside of these systems in our local communities is where it's at. Organising doesn't look one way. There is no one true way.

Lana Blue @lanablue.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
Common ground, a sense of connection, and community, is essential for change that comes from the ground up. This often means working with, and standing in solidarity with, folks we really don't like. People who annoy us. People who are actively painful. The whole range of human experiences.

Lana Blue @lanablue.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
Things like housing, fresh water, fresh healthy foods, clean air, access to education, and freedom of and potentially from religion are important to most of us. When we're disagreeing strongly with someone else coming back to those shared things may help establish common ground.

People also generally want to feel as if they're part of a community, and as if the actions they're taking will result in an outcome that supports their community/a perception of the greater good. Without having a mutually agreed upon greater good, there are things almost all humans can agree on

Lana Blue @lanablue.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
people around me, or direct role models, I would have without a doubt taken those actions. People, and young people in particular (especially homeless politically engaged young people like I was) want to act. They want to feel like they're actually doing something to make change happen

I didn't see the OP, it's been deleted. To state the obvious, a real class war is inclusive irrespective of the team sport type political views that are in fashion these days. Many people don't want real change. Contemplating unknown futures can be scary. But change we must.

We're animals just like everything else on this planet, except we've forgotten the law of the jungle and bend over for our overlords when any other animal would recognize the threat and fight to the death for their survival. (ran out of room, there's one more)

Luigi Mangione rated a book

Industrial Society and Its Future

by Theodore John Kaczynski

Clearly written by a mathematics prodigy. Reads like a series of lemmas on the question of 21st century quality of life.

It's easy to quickly and thoughtless write this off as the manifesto of a lunatic, in order to avoid facing some of the uncomfortable problems it identifies. But it's simply impossible to ignore how prescient many of his predictions about modern society turned out.

He was a violent individual - rightfully imprisoned - who maimed innocent people. While these actions tend to be characterized as those of a crazy luddite, however, they are more accurately seen as those of an extreme political revolutionary.

A take I found online that I think is interesting:

"Had the balls to recognize that peaceful protest has gotten us absolutely nowhere and at the end of the day, he's probably right. Oil barons haven't listened to any environmentalists, but they feared him.

When all other forms of communication fail, violence is necessary to survive. You may not like his methods, but to see things from his perspective, it's not terrorism, it's war and revolution. Fossil fuel companies actively suppress anything that stands in their way and within a generation or two, it will begin costing human lives by greater and greater magnitudes until the earth is just a flaming ball orbiting third from the sun. Peaceful protest is outright ignored, economic protest isn't possible in the current system, so how long until we recognize that violence against those who lead us to such destruction is justified as self-defense.

Continued in a reply because lack of space
