I think the more worrying story is that there was only a 25% turnout.

Surprisingly, I find myself agreeing with Kemi Badennoch, Labour women MPs should be bold and put themselves forward to be leader. Win or not, it would be good experience for those with leadership ambitions. I have no doubt they would acquit themselves well and bank a lot of support and good will.

IMHO as someone who voted Labour for the first time in 2024: Burnham must face scrutiny of his ideas & policies and not just be given the Premiership on a silver platter. There is no legitimacy unless there is, at the very least, a leadership contest. He won a bi-election, not a general election.

Shameful from Kemi Badenoch! How do you, as a supposedly decent human being, sitting as a member of Parliament think this is O.K.?!!

@dalevince.com is spot on here. In times of crisis, when things get tough you need a leader with stamina to weather the storm and see the job through for the mid-long term outcomes the country needs…not short term social media politics.

Exactly. The personal hostility expressed against Starmer is unwarranted and in some cases, disgraceful. This has clearly been amplified by certain media and political players for their own ends.

Labour MPs, stop the psycho drama! Building a better country needs a team effort and all of you are going to have to compromise on some of your personal political beliefs & ambitions to bring what change is needed - it’s self indulgent and is not helping improve people’s lives. Go out & deliver it!

"Brexit was, in fact, the dumbest unforced strategic error a major nation has committed in my lifetime, and I pitched the Iraq War for the GOP in my misspent youth, so I know a self-inflicted wound when I see one. But Brexit was a policy. What’s coming next is a regime change. "

NB no point in this situation of talking beyond two years about what the US might do. Or possibly even tomorrow. Trump is the singular regime right now. This is a matter of survival at the whims of an old man with nukes and economic power, and little restraint deploying them

We need to be honest about what we are seeing here. The Iranian government is still the same theocratic dictatorship and the Iranian people are in desperate straits after the US promised them liberation. The Iranians still control the Strait of Hormuz, still maintain their right to collect tolls...

Orban owns the media. He controls the information environment. He rigged the electoral system to make defeat next-to impossible. The govt of the most powerful country on earth tried to bribe Hungarian voters in his favour. It didn't work.

Orbán's electoral crushing is a far greater achievement than most people outside Hungary realise. He systemically consolidated power for 16 years, fixed the electoral map, abused govt power for political purposes & censored media. The hurdles that Hungarians overcame for this moment were immense.

It's a total shower of a government, led by a man without any capacity to control himself, and with nobody around willing to intervene and - if necessary - unseat him via the 25th amendment. There is no longer any other rational, objective way of looking at the crisis in Washington.

I had my disagreements with the BBC under Tim Davie but he was a decent man doing a difficult job. To see Trump's White House claiming credit for his downfall and attacking the BBC should worry us all.
A social media post by Karoline Leavitt (The White House Press Secretary) showing two news headlines side-by-side. The left headline, under a caption that reads "Shot" reads: "Trump goes to war with 'fake news' BBC," and the right headline under a caption that reads "Chaser" reads: "Tim Davie resigns as BBC director general over Trump documentary edit."
