#NZpol It's often argued by the wealthy, or parties like ACT, that things like increasing renewables is "too much of a drain" (same too btw for public transport). But in this 2024 article, it's shown they'd sure have a better chance if less of our public entities actually underwrote private gains.
An excerpt from article in Newsroom in 2024 titled "Power companies’ spending on new renewables fell off a cliff"

In this excerpt it is essentially argued that the public is subsidizing a wealth shift from benefiting the public interest to the private interests of shareholders seeking profit:

"Edward Miller, a researcher at the Centre for International Corporate Tax and Accountability Research, says the figures show companies’ dividends skyrocketed while the rate of capital investment into new generation collapsed.

“It is the same pot of money. The same dollars paid to invest in more renewable capacity are being paid as shareholder dividends to make investors happy. These are intentional choices made by the management of these companies.”

From 2019 to 2023 alone industrial electricity consumption declined 12.4 percent. In the decade to December 2023 per capita electricity consumption declined 23 percent. Compare this to per capital residential consumption which has been basically flat since 2016. This is deindustrialisation.
