Imo you only know which policies are cornerstones by which are prioritised. So I would say when TOP chose other policies over tax reform as bottom lines, they were saying it's not a cornerstone for them.

Exactly! They're saying the most predictable, consultant-brained, midpoint between Nat & Lab, 1000 years of working groups, technocratic stuff & there's a whole continent of libs & leftists acting like a bff has betrayed them.

LIP @l11p.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
TOP's first principle & longest-lasting priority is 'being able to work with either Nats or Labour'. Both Nats & Labour have ruled out their tax. TOP have listed their bottom lines & none of them are tax, they're milquetoast Labour-flavour stuff. I truly don't understand why people are confused.

It's been less than 2 days since Labour announced a right wing self-imposed 'fiscal plan', and the inevitable attacks are just getting started. No doubt the debate this evening will generate more. They didn't have to do this.

'suggests that if voters elect a centre-left Labour Government to “stop the cuts” in 2026, it will see Government spending drop far lower as a proportion of the economy than it is right now' Labour is actively campaigning for smaller govt. They are almost as right wing as National.

That's a handy 'tidbit'. Making the banks pay for paywave is *much* better than Nationals policy imo. #nzpol
Williams even revealed an extra tidbit to The Spinoff. Though it wasn’t part of the headlines handed out to the media, Labour plans to ban paywave fees as part of its new policy, putting the fees to use the service back on banks and credit card companies rather than small businesses. “Consumers should pay the sticker price, not extra charges at the till,” she said in a statement.

Williams is sometimes touted as a future Labour leader, and she probably eclipsed the current one in Māngere yesterday.
