Bird feathers from a Late Cretaceous coprolite
O’Connor et al. describe a Cretaceous coprolite preserving feathers. Bone fragments suggest they are from a hesperornithiform bird, consistent with feather morphologies associated with reduced water penetration observed in aquatic neornithines. Both modern and primitive feathers are present, suggesting plumage as a factor in the extinction of hesperornithiforms.
