Preorder-able, $10 @uminnpress.bsky.social A book influenced by Ursula Le Guin's dark insights, eg "...I hope you will remember that darkness is your country, where you live, where no wars are fought and no wars are won, but where the future is. Our roots are in the dark; the earth is our country."
catalog entry for ways of seeing after dark; the book cover is followed by descriptive copy that reads: Rethinking darkness through the politics and possibilities of vision Darkness is widely misunderstood, argues Kyle Parry. We take darkness as the enemy of sight, yet we can’t see without it. We call the worst parts of our lives dark, yet we wouldn’t be here without wombs, skulls, oceans, the moon, and other shadowed places. Ways of Seeing After Dark contends that darkness is not absence but presence, shaping how worlds are sensed, inhabited, and understood. Darkness brings peril, but it is also a fundamental, if increasingly threatened, condition of living together on this planet. Tracing links between John Berger’s influential Ways of Seeing and his more poetic later writings, Parry recasts contemporary conditions defined by light pollution, digital mediation, and racialized regimes of seeing. In dialogue with artists, critics, and astronomers, Ways of Seeing After Dark examines how fear of darkness is built rather than universal and how such training intersects with broader social structures, including racism and capitalism. Showing how “felt darkness displaces physical darkness” and “brighter nights bring darker days,” Parry reveals the dark as a multifaceted phenomenon with political and perceptual significance, calling for new ways of seeing with the night.

Tomorrow the UC regents are meeting at UCSF to discuss Trump's extortion attempt. This is a defining moment for the UC system, for public education, and for the university as an institution. We demand no concession, no capitulation, no cuts.
No Concessions, No Capitulation, No Cuts
On September 16 at 2pm, we are joining the AAUP and CUCFA for a rally at the William J. Rutter Center at UCSF, 1675 Owens Street, San Francisco, to demand No Concessions, No Capitulation, and No Cuts to our University of California. Please join us!

maybe the undergrad class is a core thing (e.g. light) complicated (e.g. light not just x but also y, z) but also organized (e.g light in art = light as a, b, c, d) but also urgent (e.g. light as power) but also tangible/fun (e.g. light all around you) but also not the whole story (e.g. darkness)

Can’t put words to it, but reading/holding John Berger’s notebooks is moving, prismatic, fascinating. Also: didn’t expect to find him writing 11 pages of detailed notes on (from what I can tell) Isaac Asimov’s The Universe. Quasars and all. Bits in British Library for my new book or something else

Republican presidents get power and Democratic presidents don't. That's what the last four years of SCOTUS boils down to. slate.com/news-and-pol...
Perhaps the most perverse part of CASA, other than its horrific impact on the infants of immigrants, is its timing. For four years, the Supreme Court sat back as a hand-selected group of far-right judges issued a stream of universal injunctions against the Biden administration. Then, barely five months into Trump’s second term, it suddenly cut down the practice. The court has applied an egregious double standard that awards Republican presidents with sweeping authority and presumptive legitimacy while relentlessly curtailing executive power each time a Democrat occupies the Oval Office. No democracy can long survive a regime in which a monarchical president and his black-robed collaborators supplant the Constitution with their own partisan whims.

There are now more than 2000 #NoKings events scheduled for all 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico, Guam and about a dozen foreign countries. RSVPs are skyrocketing, which is particularly worth noting because a lot of people are very understandably dead set against RSVPing. We will not back down.

This Rümeysa Öztürk hearing is radicalizing. I've been a court reporter for many years, and I've never covered anything like this: A student deeply committed to her studies, imprisoned solely over writing an op-ed, being made to testify under oath for her own freedom. Dark, dark stuff.
