There is a poem featured: “My mother is the one who took and kept the photographs of our small, stateside family. She didn’t have many from Cuba. It wasn’t until 1979 when exiles were “invited” back to the island, her first return in twenty years, that her mother and sisters gave her some of their “old” family photos—photos of the time before I or even she existed (she’s the middle child and her father died when she was seven, all her grandparents but one dead by then). These old photos are precious to her, entrusted to me to scan and return. I am claiming the importance of family photographs and home movies for my own storytelling.

Photographs augment, kindle, and refute memory. Super 8 films are silent, but they too amplify and kindle memory and spark story.”

I am Mexican, Cuban, and
American… but what does
that really mean?

The reality: I am a product of a
White, supremacist, patriarchal,
dominant system that attempts to
devalue and eradicate difference
through Americanization.

I am a Woman of Color academic…
Does that mean my life is going to be
very difficult?

Soy Latina…
Does that make me a diversity
token?

I am Brown…
Does that make me a minority?

I am /KLA-ris/…

That means I am whoever and whatever the fuck I want to be.
Yet
I must fight against the rigid expectations of the assumed identidad
the dominant cultural hegemony has crafted to make my
voice heard, to take up space, and to have power.

But, the story lives on even today.” There is a photo of a necklace with a picture charm a man and a woman smiling.

Take care of what feeds you. Academia only does part of that.” There is a photo of Ersula, Christina, and Kimberly smiling together with conference badges.
